I was told by someone at the UCSB financial aid office that you can only get the Cal Grant or the Blue and Gold and that you cant get both at the same time. Is this true?

I got the Cal Grant B and it covered full tuition.

I believe if you’re tuition is covered through other aid such as cal grant, than blue + gold won’t apply to you.
blue + gold just guarantees that your TUITION will be paid by forms of scholarship and aids.
this is what I seem to know, correct me if I’m wrong anyone.

This is correct. If you get a CalGrant, you won’t need the Blue & Gold, because your tuition & fees will be fully covered by the former.

What if you take more than 12 units? Will the additional classes be covered under either?

What happens is that Blue+Gold applies to you IF your grants do not cover the tuition. If your grant total is IE; 17k, and tuition is 13k, It will apply the grants first. However if your grant is 10k and the tuition is 13k, your grants will be put into the 13k, and the gold + blue plan will cover the 3k left over.

tl;dr, B+G plan only takes effect after Cal grants.

At the UCs you don’t pay for courses per unit, you’re paying tuition now. Tuition is just a flat rate. Enrolling in 12 units costs the same as a enrolling in 20 units.
