As the linked article said, you also need a year of physical presence (which is the same as Utah, Texas etc). So you have freshman year to meet someone…

To be clear, I would never suggest anyone engage in anything fraudulent or lie about residency. The university my kid went to had clear and specific criteria about how to get residency status and we just followed the guidelines. Since we met the criteria we got in state tuition. Each state is different and in general, I don’t think buying a condo for your kid to live in while at school or having your child work in the state where they go to school will get you in state tuition
