Hey everyone.
Just wondering if getting one merit scholarship makes you ineligible for another. I got the 10k a year University scholarship and am curious as to whether or not I'll be able to get the 1k a year NM Finalist scholarship in conjunction. If not, no big loss - would definitely rather have the 10k! But I'm still curious. (:
Thanks.

On a related note, if you got a corporate-sponsored NM scholarship, can you get an additional school-sponsored one?

I believe the NM award is separate and additive, but could be wrong as things change over the years.

2 years ago you could. I’m not aware of it changing. If you qualify for FA (more than $12k) you will get $2k instead of $1k for NM.

how do you know if you got a scholarship?

My award notification was at the top of the admitted students page, and there’s also a link on the left that says “view your scholarship letter” or something.
Thanks everyone. (;

By the way, congratulations Elanorci.

So, about plumdrum’s question, are you able to receive both the school-sponsored and corporate-sponsored national merit scholarships?

I have a similar question: what percentage of students get merit scholarships, and does being a University Scholar preclude one from receiving a College Honors Scholarship? If not, does receiving a lower level of merit scholarship (like 5k instead of 10k) lessen one’s chances of a College Honors Scholarship?

You can’t get a College Honors Scholarship if you get a University Scholarship.

Thanks, Fight.

To answer generally: we usually award about 100 University scholarships per year (amount varies; usually worth $5,000 or $10,000 per year), and about 20 College Honors scholarships (cover full tuition). You cannot receive both a College Honor and a University scholarship.
Information about merit scholarships, including information about National Merit, can be found here: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/costs/scholarships.shtml
Also (and I know this might seem out of place, but I always feel the need to say it)- please do not feel bad if you were not offered a merit scholarship. While CC as a microcosm of concerned and qualified applicants can make it seem like EVERYONE has one, as you can see the number of merit scholarships awarded per year is very limited.

Thanks for the further info, PSAC. Good to have an official voice on here.

EDIT: I probably should have included this earlier, but can one change National Merit first choice into April? I still don’t know if I’ll be going to Chicago or Rice University. It’s something that depends in good part on how Rice’s scholarship works out (or, alternatively, if I even get in) but as of right now Rice is my first choice according to National Merit. However, if I end up deciding on Chicago, I’d like to get all the savings I can. Would I still be able to take UChicago up on a National Merit scholarship at a later date? Or has that ship sailed?

You have until May 31. From the National Merit website:

Schedule specific to college-sponsored awards:
March 1 through May 31, 2010: A Finalist who has reported a sponsor college as first choice by March 1 will be included in the first group referred to that institution for scholarship consideration.
Periodically NMSC will notify sponsors of additional Finalists who have reported (by May 31) the college or university as their first choice.
April 28, 2010: NMSC will begin mailing college-sponsored Merit Scholarship offers.
NOTE: If NMSC receives notification of a change in college choice from a Finalist after
mailing a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship offer to that student, the Finalist cannot be
offered another college-sponsored Merit Scholarship award. This applies even if the new
choice of college is one that also sponsors Merit Scholarship awards. Therefore, a Finalist
who has previously reported a sponsor college as first choice but is uncertain about it may
choose to notify NMSC that he/she is now “undecided”; such notification must be received
at NMSC, via mail or by fax to (847) 866-5113, before April 28. The Finalist can subsequently
report a firm college choice that NMSC receives by May 31.
May 31, 2010: Deadline date for NMSC to receive reports of a sponsor college as first choice. Because it
is necessary to end the competition in a timely manner, only college choice reports that NMSC receives by
May 31 will be used to identify the final group of candidates to a college or university that sponsors awards

Hmmm; so it would probably be in my best interest to change my first-choice back to Undecided for the time being?
