Can you get your Drivers license while in college?

Let me explain what I mean.
I'm a senior in high school, turning 18 next month and I'm still learning how to drive. I don't have my permit yet. I'm starting to worry that I'm not going to be able to get my license by late August (when I move away for college).
My mother is giving her her old car for college, and she said we would drive down together in it with all of my clothes and such, and she would drop me and the car off and fly home after my orientation.
Let's say in August I only have my permit, not my license yet. Would I be able to schedule an appointment in my college town and get it there? I'm from the SF Bay Area CA and I'd just be moving down 7 hours to Orange County in Southern California. I know that having a car is essential in So Cal so I wouldn't want to be with out one ...

Thanks for the help!

Yes. Why wouldn’t you be able to? Just hurry up and get your permit and license now, there isn’t any real reason to keep putting it off.

Females shouldn’t drive, so you’re fine

It shouldn’t be a problem as long as you are in the same state, although you might need one of your parents to sign off on it. (I don’t know about CA, but we have to in MD) So it might not be convenient for your mom if she has to travel back down to give a signature for your license.

I just came back down for Spring Break and got my license.
I don’t see why not.

I didn’t get to take drivers ed and I have a late birthday, so if drivers ed falls through again this summer, I plan to get my license when I come home for winter break next year. No big deal as long as you don’t need a car for college (most schools won’t even allow freshmen to have cars on campus).

Not all DMVs in each state have the same requirements for drivers’ licenses. In many states (I do not know about California), an 18-year-old just has to pass written and driving tests. You should be able to easily check online for the requirements.

Why wouldn’t you be able to? Just complete all the requisites before you go, like taking drivers ed if you need to. It’s mandatory where I live.

wow lol. Where I live, NY, I got my permit the day I turned 16, took a “5 hour” safety course which was really 2 hours, practiced driving a bit, took a road test exactly two months after I got my permit, and got my license that day. I would have taken the road test sooner, but that was the earliest they could schedule me for :)

Yes, in California, if you are 18, you can obtain a permit and it’s valid as long as you have a CA licensed driver in the right-hand seat. So, get your permit and find a brave friend to ride along / teach you. S/he should preferably be dispensable just in case you get into a really bad accident. Whatever you do, don’t drive without your permit or violate the stipulations of the permit: you may end up with a seized car!

If you’re going to Berkeley, the DMV is right off the 1/1R stop at 51st and Telegraph (south of campus). You should be able to waltz on in with your birth certificate + other ID (or passport, if you have one) and test for the permit there.
