my last post for a while i swear my stats are pretty solid (2330 in one sitting, 240 psat, 3.93 uw/4.6 w, 790 math ii). my ec’s are good but not extraordinary, with some leadership and a few small awards (see my old post for my details).
things i want in a school (probably): medium sized, intellectual but still nice people, liberal arts curriculum (or at least a LAC feel), access to internships and study abroad (i want to go into public health most likely, but that changes). i want at least a medium-sized town. my parents will pay about 30k a year max but we will probably not get great financial aid because of savings (my older sibling had to turn down a first-choice school bc the efc was 65k).
here is my list so far:
crazy reach: uchicago, brown, yale
high match: scripps
match: smith, macalaster (has auto NMF aid)
safety: umd-cp (my state school, has early notification. i can definitely pay and will likely get merit), maybe goucher, maybe st. mary’s maryland
any ideas for additional matches or safeties? it would be great to have schools w/ merit and/or EA programs.
Tulane. Check into their public health options. Lots of smart kids, great city. EA option.
Your reaches won’t give you any money unless your sibling is in college. Have you run the NPC for these schools?
Your list of safeties looks fine. I don’t think you need to add any others. Take a look at a few more reaches that have full scholarships (which you will probably have to turn down if you don’t get the scholarship). Rice, Emory and Wash U come to mind. As for the rest, check this thread:http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/most-merit-aid
My D had similar stats to yours and also wanted an LAC in a not too small town and was looking for merit. She got great merit at Lawrence U and loves it there. Appleton is a town of about 70,000 in a metro area of 200k. The downtown is adjacent to the campus and there are fun shops and restaurants as well as a performing arts center, a farmers market and some festivals. They have a well developed study abroad program and a lot of students go abroad for a term. They are strong in the sciences and the academics are rigorous. My D has a research spot with a bio professor for this summer. It could be an appealing safety for you.
American University and University of Rochester can be matches too.
@cellomom2 Thank you for the recommendation! I checked out the Lawrence threads and am really impressed. Probably adding it to the list thanks so much!
Best of luck in your college search! Let me know if I can answer any specific questions as you go along.
Brandeis, Skidmore, perhaps Bryn Mawr
