hey everyone. i'm trying to find one more safety, i already have smu and u of a on there. and i'm debating on these two reaches. here are the statistics

ACT: 31 or 2100 sat

AP's: Span- 5 Eng- 4 US History- 3

GPA: 3.4 w
3.3 uw

ECs listed on app: football, track, was in 2 clubs, and work

Job/Work Experience: did finances that were really receipts at a family friend's company and also had a job there too

Essays (subject and responses): already started so they should be very good- on two hardships that have come down on me the last 2 years, and my dealing w/ them.

Teacher Recs: better than great

Counselor Rec: great

School Type: Private, does not rank

Ethnicity: Hispanic

Gender:M

Also: Took 3 summer courses at a local comm. college; got A's

ok so...what would be one more good safety school?

and of these two reaches: Vanderbilt (aff. action) and Carnegie Mellon, which school would most likely accept me?

I would imagine that most schools would like to increase their ethnic diversity, and to me it looks like CMU and Vanderbilt could be great schools for you even if you weren't a member of an under-represented ethnic group. I don't think either "reach" is all that reachy for you.

Is your prospective major engineering? If so I would look at RPI and RIT for safeties. If it's engineering, I would also consider looking at Penn, Cornell, Duke, and MIT as reachier reaches.

A true safety is a school where you are guaranteed admission based on your stats, and that you can pay for without any financial aid other than federal aid that you qualify for. For most students, this means that they need to develop at least a passing affection for one of their home state public universities, if not for one of the community colleges. I take it that U of A is your home state public. Are you definitely in at U of A based on your stats? Can you pay for U of A? If not, keep looking for a safety.

Is U of A Alabama? If so, that's not only safe, it's a good bet for merit aid. If you like SMU, Vandy and Alabama, you ought to love Furman, which should also be a safety. Both U.S. News and Princeton Review consider CMU easier to get into than Vandy.

Of course, try some of the UCs - great schools. It looks like UC San Diego would be a safety. Look at UCs in which you are about 75th percentile or above for entrance. Those should be safeties.
