"I went to Gap and bought what was on the mannequin."

The mannequin. I must try that.

The mannequin. I must try that.

" integrals and other cool stuff."

lol. oh venkz.

You can end up buying some wierd clothes at Urban Outfitters if you don't know what's in/out of fashion .. i recommend Old Navy for basics that will stay in style for a long time.

Send him to American Eagle, you can't go wrong there even if you're color blind.

$200/ year? sheesh cant help you there.. maybe ross or kmart? gap or old navy 2? ohhhh and a really good store is H & M..its cheap and really fashionable. so if you have one there definetely visit

Anything from Polo RL, J. Crew, lacoste... Atleast thats up here, but as others have been saying, around campus, he'll probably need what Venkat89 said. Also, S&B has clothes for cheap prices if thats what your after.

Yeah, I would just buy some standard Michigan gear and then some basics from J. Crew/Polo - stuff that won't "go out of style" like polo shirts and chinos.

just a few basic solid color t-shirts, maybe 3 and 2 pairs of jeans, Thats I have ever worn, most people I know think guys who wear name brand clothes, or cloths that are meant to be stylish, think those guys are gay. I agree.

and banana girl, $200 is alot on cloths, i have probably spent $100 in the past 6-7 years total on clothing. not including shoes.

Step 1) Find the most expensive "neighborhood" in your town.
Step 2) Find the Goodwill nearest that neighborhood.
Step 3) Rename store, "Gucciwill" and shop there.

You will generally find stuff that didn't fit someone or that someone outgrew.

As one example, I wanted to get some shorts for this summer. I bought 3 pairs of Ralph Lauren "chinos" <post 27=""> (I have no idea what this means but they are simple and cotton with no logos except on the back pocket) for $9.88. Finding the good stuff depends on the size (28s for instance, are very rare in the pants dept.) and you have to go often to snap up the good stuff. Well worth the time and effort to avoid the mall and mall prices. </post>

I would suggest American Apparel if you're looking for online stores. No logos or fancy embellishments and everything is made in the US. The fabrics are very nice. I have no idea about the price. I disagree with some folks here who suggested buying the model look. Personally, I would never want to look like one of those clones.

Breaking Away is a fantastic movie.

You can also find good stuff at Marshalls (NOT Marshall Fields). They sell designer wear with small defects and/or pieces no one wanted at the main stores.

nordtrom rack and outlet mall

And when express/gap have there occasional good sale

Outlet malls = great place to find good looking CHEAP shirts
nordtrom rack = great place for business casual, suits and jeans
express/gap = great when sales are happening and things go on sale fast

No, $200 was what we used to spend. The budget goes way up now. lol

And what great responses - thanks so much!

ps Venkat, do you mean cafepress?

thinkgeek.com? They have cool geeky clothes :D.

SBDad - I think you are a great dad for taking the time and effort to help your son with this. I'm not sure all dads would be as considerate!
From what I have seen with my daughter's friends I would suggest American Eagle as well. Their clothes are not too pricey ( especially if you can catch a sale) and aren't too trendy so they won't look outdated in 3 months.
I would just get a couple of pairs of pants and a handful of shirts to start with and then wait until he goes to school to add to that. He may want to see what the students wear at his campus and take some cues from that.
I also agree that if you go into the store and ask the sales people for help they can really guide you. A lot of times the employees are wearing the clothes that they sell so you can see what really looks good on them and try that.
Be careful in Marshalls or Ross - a lot of the stuff there is there for a reason ( out of style, just plain ugly LOL ) and if you are not confident in your style IQ you may be better off for now in regular stores and look for sales, etc.
Good luck!

if he's going to michigan, get him some hoodies...we like them here...a lot...but take care that none of them say ohio state :o

I go shopping with my friends that are girls, but if he wants to look good, try

A) Hollister -you can get cheap stuff there thats on clearance, and most of their other stuff isn't that expensive
B) Abercrombie -their stuff is expensive, but sometimes you can get good stuff for a good price on clearance
C) AE-they are pretty good and have preppy clothes

basically, preppy is in lol

your son will become a fruit.

LL Bean. Classic stuff.

Michigan will be cold, get some corduroy trousers, wool sweaters, flannel-lined khakis/jeans and barn coats for him.

Agree with neelesh; preppy never goes out of style, though if he's going to be in Michigan, he'll need a lot of warm stuff. I realize your budget, but I'd HIGHLY recommend a Patagionia fleece. All their winter stuff is amazing.

Whatever you do, don't buy clothes with the brand name in huge, bold letters. I don't know about other people, but I cringe every time I see ABERCROMBIE & FITCH displayed prominently on the shirt. Fashion faux pas. Not to mention it shows that he cares about the brand name (as opposed to quality... not that brand name clothes are better in quality) and that he's not experienced wearing brand name clothes but desperately wants to. Btw, take my advice with a grain of salt. I actually stopped buying clothes a long time ago.

I'm not a fashion expert by any means (my friends have criticized my fashion sense to an extreme degree), but I really like the outfits below. If only I could find cheaper versions of them...
