Can you just take regular courses instead of SAGES?

When I first heard of SAGES I told myself that it didn't seem like a great idea, so I was wondering if students could just take regular courses or SOMETHING in order to avoid them! I enjoy listening to talks but this really doesnt seem very productive and going though these threads have only re-enforced that thought...

Thanks for any replies

I'm currently a freshman...and no, unfortunately, you cannot avoid SAGES. The "First Seminar", which is what first semester freshman take, is especially useless-but the later seminars are much better.

SAGES is not supposed to be "listening to talks". It is actually a replacement for writing course requirements and it is required to graduate. You can select the topical area you register for and you can opt to take SAGES classes in later semesters with advisor approval. Some of the SAGES teachers were positively reviewed. Case has an extensive on-line student survey of classes and instructors (you need a student ID and log in).

What is the supposed "advantage" of SAGES over regular courses?

The way they presented it made it seem like it was faster because all these different classes were being combined....thats something that kinda scares me bout Case but if it really is that bad i assume they will remove it no?

What I've heard of SAGES is that it's a program to develop engineers and scientists with better writing and communication skills.
