Can you major/minor in a foreign language without having any prior experience?

Alright so I have been learning a bit of Korean lately and I absolutely love it. I was wondering when I go to college could I minor in Korean even though I’ve never had any actual classes in it. I’ve spoken some with a Korean friend but it’s not formal experience. I really want to know so I can be ready for the workload that it may bring if it’s possible. If not how much Korean would I need to know in order to minor in the language? Thank you so much for the help!

It depends on the College, but for less commonly taught languages such as Korean, it’s actually the most common situation.
Look at Middlebury, as well as the critical language flagship at University of Hawaii (you major in whatever and take intensive language classes in Korean that being you to professional level by the time you graduate, with a guaranteed time abroad in Korea. Highly recruited program.)

Yes. I majored in Japanese and I didn’t have any actual prior experience with the language before college. I knew a few words and phrases from watching anime and Jdramas and listening to Jpop but I did not know how to actually speak, read, or write it.
