can you make suggestions please?

Hi. My high school junior son is a golfer, has a 3.3 gpa at a very competitive private high school in PA. He has ACT score of 25. He wants a school w/ 4500-10K students, some jewish population, fraternities, broad curriculum so he can explore--want beyond traditional liberal arts. He has no idea what he wants to be but thinks he wants to study business. Could be Div 1 or 3; he'd want to play club golf if he can't make a Div 1 team. He values a beautiful campus, a community feel, relationships with professors. I want him to be challenged but not outmatched. He is a late-bloomer.

Schools we're now considering: Elon, Guilford, UNC Greensboro, College of Charleston, U Hartford, U Denver, Franklin and Marshall

Thoughts?? Thank you so much.

Check out the Hillel website to get the stats on the Jewish population at those schools. Maybe a good metric, since he wants fraternities as well, would be to consider schools that have a chapter of a Jewish fraternity? Not that he would necessarily join it, but that would give you an indicator of whether the school has sufficient Jewish population/involvement to suit him.

For example, here are stats about Elon
Enrollment:
Undergraduate: 5,100
Graduate: 500
Jewish Enrollment:
Undergraduate: 250
Graduate: 0

It does not have Jewish fraternities.
The Hillel meets monthly.

Guilford has about 65 Jewish undergrads.
That may be o.k. with him–but he should know going in.

Hartford, on the other hand, appears to be about 30% Jewish and has three Jewish fraternities.

heads up: there is a thread from a couple of years ago re: HIllel stats…apparently they are not updated regularly and only reflect those who actually sign up for HIllel…

In response to the above, we are contacting Hillels on each campus we are considering (as well as students at those schools who are involved)

Sheer numbers may or may not reflect what is going on at the particular campus…
Hillel directors are very honest about involvement and activity within their facilities…

To the OP: I’m sending you a PM

Muhlenberg in PA might be a good one to check into.
