Can you please grade my essay?

It took me more than 4 hours to complete it, I guess I am supposed to finish a nearly similar one in less than 25 minutes tomorrow :)

Assignment:* Do you agree with Maya Angelou that it is pointless to complain? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.*

Whenever we read about major turning points in history, we discover that these turning points were led by few dauntless people. The more we read, the more we understand that these people have many traits in common, one of which is their strong desire for real change. This particular desire forms the tremendous difference between people who keep complaining without getting any results, and those who devote their lives to change the things they are dissatisfied with.

One of these important turning points occurred when racial segregation in the United States of America was ended. The beginning of this end started when a black lady refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger. This brave lady, Rosa Parks, was arrested and fined for violating a city ordinance. However, her act of defiance initiated a movement which was led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself. This movement surprisingly ended racial discrimination in America within few years. When she was asked about her life before that incident, she replied "Back then, we didn't have any civil rights. It was just a matter of survival, of existing from one day to the next." From this saying, it is very obvious that Rosa Parks was discontented with discrimination. Consequently, she did not give up her bus seat and complain later to her friends. Instead, she made an intrepid decision and took action to change the situation. Today, hundreds of thousands of black Americans are grateful to this very decision.

Another important change in history took place in India, which was then a colony under British control. A man named "Mahatma Gandhi", who was greatly influenced by ideas calling for freedom and civil rights, was very dissatisfied with the British monopoly over economy, so he encouraged Indians to boycott all British goods and buy local goods instead. The most effective part in this boycott was boycotting the salt produced by the dominating British companies, when Gandhi motivated people to produce their own salt from the sea. These actions struck the British economy harshly and supported the Indian economy, which helped India gain its independence later in the future. Unlike many people who kept complaining about the suffering caused by British invaders, Gandhi, who was later assassinated, decided to take steps towards change. Although it cost him his own life, this change provided a better life for millions of Indian citizens.

In each of the cases mentioned above, an individual was not satisfied with certain issues, so he/she acted to change it. On the contrary, the situation of those who kept complaining without taking action is similar to that of kids, who keep crying and nagging whenever they get upset by an incident. Clearly, Maya Angelou was right when she said "If you do not like something, change it". For complaining is very similar to a swing, it makes you feel that you are moving, but it takes you nowhere.

how much would you give it on a scale of 12?

Hi,

just out of curiosity, why would you spend 4 hours writing a practice prompt? wouldn’t it make more sense to time yourself and write a couple 25 minute essays?

I would give you a 10 on this essay. Clear, coherent and nice but … why did you spend 4 hours on the essay when it only represents 20% of the Writing Section? If I were you, I would go practice on a real SAT test rather than wasting my time on the essay.

Here are some tips that I learned on The Writing Section:

 • examples doesn’t matter to the correcter - right or wrong : it’s the same to the SAT reader (Harry Potter = Scarlett Letter)
 • write AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, fill ALL the space that is provide, the more you right, the more points you score
 • SAT writing scorers gets only ONE chance to read the essay, so they won’t care much about grammar mistakes as long as it isn’t that evident
 • work on transitions
 • 3 examples should be good

Thanks for help!

Today I did the SAT and I did not have time to complete the last 1/2 sentence :(

And the topic was sort of unusual, i never seen such an essay prompt. I think it was not clear enough so I might have written sth out of topic

I will wait two weeks to find out,

thanks again,
