** Passage: ** History has shown us that liberty is not a guaranteed, natural possession. The great landmarks of liberty, such as the American Bill of Rights and the Emancipation Proclamation, were all gained only through the sacrifices of many visionaries and patriots. we should be ever mindful that freedom, if we are to preserve it, must be safeguarded with our lives.

** Assignment: ** Do you believe that one should sacrifice life for liberty? Plan and write...

** Essay: **
People should be willing to sacrifice their lives for the ultimate liberty of many. Several examples from historical figures and events show that sacrifice is necessary for the greater good.

As shown by Mahatma Gandhi, sacrifice may be at stake in order to ensure liberty. Gandhi sought to bring independence for India from England in the 1940's. He believed the only way to liberate his people was to bring about civil disobedience. Thus, he organized nationwide protests and marches in order to grab the attention of the British. By doing so, Gandhi acknowledged that he was the leader of the Indian Independence Movement, which acted as a great risk to his life. Finally, India got what it wanted in 1947, although the country was forced to partition. Following this, Gandhi was assassinated by a nationalist. Therefore, Gandhi showed that liberty must be accomplished at any cost, even if one must sacrifice himself or herself.

Martin Luther King, Jr. also showed that one should be willing to sacrifice one's self in order to pursue liberty. King led the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's, which was a time where there was mass inequality for African-Americans. However, King envisioned a land of equality and did not stop his actions. He put together protests and marches, most notably the one at Washington D.C., where King gave his "I Have A Dream" speech. King faced mass adversity as many whites did not like his goal of ultimate equality. Many tried to tear him down, but he kept fighting. Finally, the Civil Rights Movement saw great improvement as many African-Americans saw new and equal liberties come forth. However, liberty came at a price when King was assassinated in 1963. Hence, King showed that sacrifice may be necessary to ensure a higher power, like liberty.

The American Revolution showed a time of necessary liberty. Colonists were fed up with the harsh and cruel treatment by the British, what with England's numerous unfair taxing. So the colonists decided to rebel in order to have their liberties, and they began the war. Numerous colonists died in the process. Families lost father figures and friends lost meaningful companions. However, in the end, the colonists won their independence from the British and their liberties were restored. The actions of the colonists showed that liberty is essential and therefore must be fought for. Many colonists sacrificed their lives, but they did so for the ultimate liberty of all Americans.

After closely examining Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the American Revolution, it is shown that people must, indeed, be willing to sacrifice themselves for the liberty of all. Without liberty, people would have loss of opinion and be totally controlled by the government. Liberty is one of the most fundamental rights of man and therefore must be fought for, no matter what the cost may be.

[I found one or two errors, but other than that it’s pretty good. The only thing you need to improve on is how you structured some of your sentences.]

thanks. on a scale of 1-12, what would you give me?

You have written a good essay which will probably get a 10 or 11, but I think for a 12 you need to add a few higher level vocabulary words. In any of your examples you could incorporate the word galvanize or indomitable or say they did not vacillate in pursuing their goals.

lol, i can see that you followed this:

I mean u followed everything, which should give u a high score…but with more transitional phrases between paragraphs and vocab, u should have a 12

haha yeah i definitely used that a lot. and thanks for the advice.
