Hi. My high school junior son is a golfer, has a 3.3 gpa at a very competitive private high school in PA. He has ACT score of 25. He wants a school w/ 4500-10K students, some jewish population, fraternities, broad curriculum so he can explore--wants beyond traditional liberal arts. He has no idea what he wants to be but thinks he wants to study business. Could be Div 1 or 3; he'd want to play club golf if he can't make a Div 1 team. He values a beautiful campus, a community feel, relationships with professors. I want him to be challenged but not outmatched. He is a late-bloomer.

Schools we're now considering: Elon, Guilford, UNC Greensboro, College of Charleston, U Hartford, U Denver, Franklin and Marshall

We knew a family in our school district where the son enrolled at Coastal Carolina, due to his exceptional golfing. You could check that out. Evidently the team practices in Myrtle Beach. (which I hear is a big tourist destination.)

dfedder, there is a mother of a current student who plays golf under the U of Tampa (alphabetical listing). Her son loves this school. Tampa could be a good fit for your son.

I think you have a good list. I think stats are too low for Tulane, be aware it would be a reach. Otherwise would be a decent match. Goucher is about 2,000 undergrads, but still might be a good choice with its nice campus in a suburban location (and lots of girls, btw).

I haven’t researched Brandeis’ admission stats but it strikes me that it’s a school that looks at the whole person - not just one aspect so I wouldn’t discount it.

Brandeis and Emory seem like they would be a reach. U Hartford should be safe. Nice campus and I hear their business major is very strong. Lots of Jews. Size fits too.

I would think you’d want to consider schools in the South, since schools up north (i.e.Hartford) are pretty chilly. How about Vanderbilt (or Rhodes)? They’ve got frats and nice weather. Not sure about the Jewish population or if it’s a reach.

I agree with LINYMOM about Emory and Brandeis. Even if my child got into one of them, I would not want my son attending if he had the same stats as the OP’s son. Others would send their child to a reach school, but I would not.

Editing to say that Vanderbilt is another reach school, and I would not send my kid there if he got in with a 3.3 and ACT of 25. Those are solid stats, but not for those schools. JMO.

Vanderbilt=even more selective than Brandeis. Fewer than of 20% of their students have ACT<30 OR GPA<3.5, much less both.

(These are a lot of the schools I researched for my daughter and scratched off the list as too selective. The Venn Diagram of not-too-big-but-not-too-small, not-too-selective-but-not-too-non-selective, and Jewish presence on campus is a tough one!)

Thanks all, for the info. I should have accessed an SAT/ACT conversion before I made recommendations.

And this is the first I have heard of McDaniel (not that that means much!) But learning continues.

Come to think of it, though, is it unusual to have a golf course on campus? I know that Grand Valley State in Michigan has a pretty nice course…D2, so there are scholarships, but I think the OP said that was not of interest. Will go back and read again.

mafool, McDaniel is a CTCL school (used to be called Western Maryland College). It is a match school for a student with OP’s son’ s stats. It is a smaller school though.
