Assignment : Do people accomplish more when they are allowed to do things on their own way?

To reach a goal, we may follow different paths but the most beneficial is one we feel best fits our needs. Method is a matter of personnal preferences, a choice that everybody has to respect. Doing things in our own way, we get the opportunity to manage our time according to our needs as well as the possibility of broadening our knowledge by the exploration of varied subjects.

The appropriate management of our time is crucial to our success: when some people prefer a fast rhythm, others may suffer and feel incapable. That was my case when I was taking music classes. At the beginning, I attended a class that, by some chance, regrouped a dozen of virtuoso students. I was not bad, but I could not follow them and I faced problems. Then I decided to search for a class which follows a slower “tempo” and the result was excellent. I managed to recapitulate what I have lost while doing things in a way that is not mine.
Furthermore, attempting to achieve our goals through the means we feel best may bring additional gain by broadening our knowledge. When I took my first philosophy class last year, I felt the subject abstruse and inaccessible. Listening to the teacher’s verbose explanation did not attract me. However, the exams were nigh and I had to have a sense of what that was talking about; I decided to change my study plan: no more unnecessary reading of “dull” explanation. I started my own research, surfing the internet, reading indeterminable passages, deciphering quotes… but I was happy because I was convinced : “I did it my way.”

In conclusion, we can value the importance of choosing to do things in our own way. Time management as well as extra learning are examples of how we can achieve more : an issue nowadays more and more discussed in school teaching system.
