Can you rank the following schools in terms of world prestige?

UMichigan vs UCBerkeley vs McGill University vs UCL

I'm just curious, because I want to work in many places, i.e. in Europe, Asia and North America, so international prestige would be a factor.

I know prestige is not all that matters. I'm just curious about one part of college selection process.

[Academic Ranking of World Universities | ARWU | First World University Ranking | Shanghai Ranking](http://www.arwu.org/) is generally the most referred to world ranking of universities. Cal ranks number 2 on it, UCL 21, UMich 22, and McGill 61.

I can tell you UC Berkeley is pretty well known in Korea, but I can’t answer for the rest of Asia or for Europe. As for the University of Michigan, seeing as even people in the west coast of the US have hardly heard of it, I don’t think it would be well-known abroad. Is UCL the University College London? I might have heard of it… once. I’ve never heard of McGill. I can’t speak for everyone though. I might just be living under a rock.

UC Berkeley is going to be the most prestige. It’s way better too. (:

I know Berkeley is awesome.

I’m not so sure about McGill. It ranks 17 on US News World Rankings, and is considered the best university for almost all majors in Canada. But still, many people do not rank it very high, because it is not very selective and has a lot of students? That’s quite a similar case to that of universities I named here.

UCL is consistently ranked in top 10 of many world rankings. But many people have never heard of it. I do not know why.

In terms of name recognition world wide, UC Berkley ranks top.

“As for the University of Michigan, seeing as even people in the west coast of the US have hardly heard of it, I don’t think it would be well-known abroad.”

Do you live on the west coast? You’ve never heard of McGill? Sorry to sound so nasty, but you must be living under a rock.

I’ve lived and traveled in Asia for 30 years. Michigan (my alma mater) is as well known and respected as Berkeley. I’d say McGill is too though I have less first hand knowledge.

I’m from Hong Kong and have lived there all my life. I would say all of them would be regarded highly by employers. The average person on the street will know none of them though.

In terms of global prestige, I think:

Berkeley > Michigan >>> UCL > McGill
