Can you really just go to community college for 1 or 2 years and transfer?

I hear after 2 years you can transfer as a junior to a 4yr college but that it takes most people 3 years, has that been true for you? Also can you transfer after one year as a sophmore?

I transferred in 3. Most of the people I knew transferred in 3-5. A couple people I know transferred in 2 but they had taken really heavy course loads. I can only speak for science/engineering majors.

Check out the articulation agreements. If you don’t know what I mean…an articulation agreement is an agreement between a CC and 4 year college(s) which states which courses at the CC will be accepted for credit by the 4 year college and under what conditions. It’s smart to check out the articulation agreement before you select your courses, so that you’ll take classes that will transfer.

Here’s an example from Sullivan County (NY) Community College:

As you can see, SCC has articulation agreements with several different colleges and in some cases they are specific to certain majors.

^ that sucks because I wanted to major in somethin science related but I’m not sure what yet.

^^thanks ya I heard about some students not checking to see if its transferable but I’m still not sure if I want to go to a UC or CSU because not all classes are transferable to both.

Many students change majors halfway in. I was a comp. sci major planning to transfer to a CSU and now I am a business/econ major planning to transfer to a UC. Things change but that is the beauty of CC. You can experiment with different majors without the huge repercussions you’d have in a UC, like money. Most people I know transfer in about 3. 2 if the course load is heavy. I’ve seen others transfer in 4,5 etc. It depends a lot on the major, financial situation, employment etc.

At present, you only receive the Pell grant for 6 years.

Yes you should 100 % be able to do that if you are committed. I am in my 3rd semester(second year) at a community college and am planning to transfer next fall. I am not a science major but one of my very good friends transferred to cornell as a pre-med major after doing two years at a community. So as long as you are dedicated you should be able to fulfill this goal. You will have to work at it though. I took 30 credits last year and am doing 18 this semester. Many people transfer before they finish 2 years so you should definitely be able to do it in 2 years if your motivated.

Wow thanks, maybe it won’t be so bad but I think I’m leaning towards biology(marine).

Yes you can transfer after only two years. That is why it’s called a two-year college. However, if you have a combination of not knowing exactly what your major is and needing difficult courses, it will probably take longer. You can transfer after only one year, but that would be a lower-division transfer and you would also need your high school information to apply.

This is my second year at a CC and I am going to be transferring after this year, but I am an economics major. My schedule isn’t as restrictive as, say, a biology major’s schedule. Hard sciences and engineering majors CAN transfer after just two years, but it’s a heavier course load. I consider 3 years at a CC perfectly respectable, especially for science-heavy majors.

I think the reason it takes so many people upwards of 3 years is because they go into CC not knowing what they want, and maybe not even taking college seriously. The people who really want to transfer will find a way to do it in 2 (SOMETIMES 3) years.

Yes. Depending on some majors, I would even recommend transferring after one year. Transfers typically have to take an extra year anyway because of course discrepancy - I transferred after 2 years from community college into Materials Engineering and need one extra year. My friend transferred into Electrical Engnieering after the same time and does NOT need another year. My sister transferred after one year and also does NOT need another. It depends on your major, really.

UPDATE: Well looks like it’ll take me about 3 years. I wish I took college classes during my high school summers to get ahead. Oh well

Im a 2nd semester at CC in engineering. I’ll have taken all my required classes after 30 credits my first year, 2 math classes i plan to take over the spring/summer, and around 25-30 credits next year.
