Can you reapply to a school if you are outright denied (not waitlisted) to a school during early decision. For example, on the Virginia Tech website, it says that they wouldn't like you to reapply if denied. However, say perhaps you rushed through your app during early decision or you improved your SAT score, would you be able to reapply?

No. If you are denied, it’s over. This is one main reason why people don’t apply ED to their top choices: The app isn’t fully ready or they want to take the SAT/ACT one more time to try for a better score, or they are hoping that one more semesters’ worth of grades in senior year will help reinforce the idea of an upward trend or prove that they are ready for the rigor of college classes.

However, if you are deferred, your application is automatically considered in the Regular Decision round. Usually, the colleges want to see your first semester grades improve, or need more time evaluating your application

Telling a school that you “rushed through your application” and deserve an additional shot will not impress them as a reason that you should now be admitted.

If you want to apply ED, you have plenty of time to hone your application, and if you had wanted to improve your scores, the test dates have been well publicized…it was up to you to prepare and take the tests at the appropriate times.

Whether you can re-apply depends on each individual school. Some schools say “game over” if you are denied ED. Other schools place your application in the pile with regular decision applications for reconsideration–when schools do this, you can always submit improved test scores, new awards etc. They will also want to see continued strong grades, of course.

If you are denied, then the school is basically saying that there is no chance that they will admit you in the regular round (unlike deferral, which means that you have some chance).
