Can you recommend me a residence? I'm somewhat lost.

Hi, I recently accepted my McGill University admission offer and now it's time to choose housing. I'm a relatively quiet person who really doesn't care for partying/drinking culture. I'd prefer a single, but I don't want to be in an antisocial environment. What's important to me is having a community of down to earth people, with a high population of musicians/creative people being a plus. I hope to get involved in the local music scene (especially jazz and blues) but I don't know if that factors in. Possibly a residence located near the Plateau? I don't know much about Montreal, since I'm coming from NYC. So far I'm looking at Greenbriar, MORE Housing, and Douglas. Thanks for any help you could give.

I’m also considering the MORE housing (and possibly RVC) and I’d like to know what they’re like. I know from another thread that RVC is great for music, but how are both choices for someone who’s quiet but would prefer to make some friends with people in the residences?

I heard from someone over on Reddit that RVC wasn’t the greatest dorm. Could you possibly find that thread about it being good for music?
And sounds like you’re looking for the same thing as me. Who knows, we may end up in the same MORE residence!

Here’s the thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/mcgill-university/1121118-rvc.html</a> Now that I read it more closely the poster said “close to music buildings,” which I guess isn’t very telling about how good the dorm is in general, but I’ve also heard that there are several pianos in the common rooms.

From the pictures I’ve seen it has relatively small rooms, plus I’m not very keen on the meal plans, but it is really close to campus, especially the science and engineering buildings which would be the ones I’d visit most often (except probably the library).

That’s true, we might! I had been considering Greenbriar before but I thought that might be too isolated if I chose a single, and since I’m pretty lazy Douglas seemed so far, especially during the winter.

Ah. I think RVC would be my fourth or fifth choice. What faculty/major are you? Arts/economics with a probable transfer to Management/International Management here.

You know, when I went to the Admitted Students meeting in NYC an alumni recommended me Greenbriar. However, I’ve been seeing people say that Greenbriar can be the “antisocial” dorm which I would really not enjoy. I’d want a tight knit community, which MORE seems to provide (along with being able to have a single while still being a part of a community). I also dig the idea of a partial meal plan.

I’m deciding between either life science or electrical engineering, but leaning towards engineering right now.

Also, I still need to go to one of those admitted students meetings or visit the school again. The last time I did that was in last summer, and we only stayed half a day and didn’t really talk to anyone since it was a summer weekend. But yeah, I think Greenbriar is nice as a dorm/apartment, but I’m not really talkative and I think given that kind of environment I would find it really difficult to talk with my neighbors.

Where are you from? McGill is holding receptions all over the country ([Rendezvous receptions](http://www.mcgill.ca/newstudents/events/rendezvous/)) that you could go to.

I’m in the northeast, pretty close to NYC (so that was probably the one I should’ve gone to), but my parents are taking me up to Montreal during April break so I never really bothered.

Did you think the reception was good/informative?

Greenbriar or RVC would be perfect for u

Tim - Yeah, most definitely. I think being able to talk to alums/hear their POV was invaluable in confirming my decision to go there. By no means would I call it “necessary”, but I’d go to one if you have the option.

Sheheryar93 - Can you expand on that more?

I’m thinking of talking to the people there when I go visit, and I guess the rest I’ll just have to wait and see. I’ll probably ask about housing when I’m there too.

Gardner is actually a great environment for musicians. There are several people in the music program and several kids who are involved in bands and/or are involved in the Montreal music scene. There is also a practice room in the basement. But it may be a little more lively than you are looking for, in which case I would recommend MORE or Douglas. Greenbriar is completely anti-social and quiet. There is no community feel, because no one has any real reason to interact seeing as they have their own kitchen and bathroom.

Huh, that’s kind of strange considering I’ve heard that Gardner/Molson/McConnell are the “party dorms”. Yeah, the more I read about Greenbriar the more I’m afraid I’ll be stuck with really antisocial kids and not network as easily. Maybe I should consider switching it from my 3rd choice…

So I am probably going to McGill next year in Montreal… and I am stressing about which Rez I should make my top 3…

I want to have a nice community feel where like you can see everyone a lot and floors become really close. I want a single dorm, but in the same hall as all the other dorms. I want co-ed! And I want a good party scene, but not outa-control…

I heard New Rez was good location, but *******s? And upper Residents are cool but pain in the ass to walk all the way up that hill? Are the upper residents really that outa the way from your classes?

So which is the biggest party one?

Like, I want to be able to make a lot of new friends easily without having to travel to other dorms. And I don’t wanna travel a long distance to class…

Ahaha I know I sound picky but I’m just confused i guess

Currently my choices are
1)Gardner
2)DOuglass
3)New Rez

Just wanted to point out the obvious – all the residents change every year. Dorms at McGill are almost exclusively occupied by 1st year students. Party dorms are created by the incoming freshman; there’s no such thing as a consistent party dorm.

I lived 1 semester at McConnell and 1 at New Rez, and if I had to go back and do it all over again knowing what I know, I would’ve stayed in a MORE house or New Rez. Walking to Upper Rez can be brutal in wrong weather. Add some groceries to that mix and it just turns into a circus. New Rez is positively luxurious compared to other dorms, but MORE house is more intimate and you’ll socialize with a smaller circle of residents.

Hope this helps!
