can you ride a bike in the winter?

are the roads/sidewalks cleared and everything?
if so, i think i'll invest in a bike.
my classes are rather inconveniently spaced so that it takes a long time to walk b/w classes,
but way too close as to warrant a need to ride the bus.

how are the prices of the bikes down the shops in college town?

D took her bike to school this semester but says she knows she won’t be using it - certainly after winter break.

people still use bikes. what i noticed after growing up in dc and going to ithaca is that the people in ithaca KNOW how to deal with snow! after each snow fall, the sidewalks and streets are immediately plowed and salted, even before you even wake up to begin to go to class. that being said, last winter, it didnt really snow a lot (and it doesnt rain in the winter because it is cold enough that it would turn into snow) so many days were cold and dry, allowing for students to safely use their bikes.

I don’t know if they are available in Ithaca, but some people where I live like to use studded bike tires during the snowy season.

^maybe a good place to check would be the bike store on college ave in collegetown

i thought i saw a bike priced at $2000 dollars at the bike shack; but maybe i read an extra zero 0.0
their prices didn’t seem too good.

Are you sure you were in Ithaca last winter? It snowed a lot that one day in Spring semester, early classes on that day were canceled because of the snow.

Yes, they are, but I still wouldn’t bike if I was given a choice.

your ability to ride a bike in ithaca during winter really depends a lot on construction and traffic…

i’d say winter bike riders are 1/5th of what they are during the nicer days…

Doesn’t Cornell have a lot of hills? My daughter was slipping and slidding with her snow boots on some days (black ice), I don’t know if riding a bike is the safest thing to do in the winter.

^ in practical terms not that bad. Getting from West Campus to the main campus involves climbing a big hill (Lib slope) … the rest of the campus is pretty flat or rolling … it really shouldn’t be a problem.

(PS to the OP - if the bike is for slugging around campus I’d suggest buying a cheap used bike and then selling it back when you’re done … it will be cheap transportation and not be a big deal if it gets stolen)

From my experiences last year, I wouldn’t say that Cornell is good at all with plowing the sidewalks. The sidewalks were walkable alright, but that was only because hundreds of other students had walked on them beforehand. You’ll soon see that it’s a big mushy mess. What they then do is plow away that mushy mess around midday.

yea i was in ithaca. by not snowing a lot, it didnt snow everyday. we only had one big storm. i guess im biased being that i heard about my family being snowed in for 2 weeks during the great snowmaggedon of 2010

in my past 3 yrs here. last year snowed the most by far.

don’t pay more than a few hundred dollars for an OK but not fantastic bike, use it for a few years in all the nice weather, and you’ll definitely get your money’s worth.
