I was just wondering...in order to do well in college especially in Computer Science or Engineering do I have to stop playing videogames? I heard it's noticeably harder to do well with the distraction of playing a computer or videogame.

Depends on the person!

I put the PRO in procrastination.

Honestly, moderation is key. Manage your time well and do what you want.

It's possible to do well at even some of the most difficult colleges getting wasted a couple nights a week even for pre-meds. Playing videogames you dont have to deal with lack of sleep and hangovers. When your body's paying for previous nights it's hard to be motivated to study. You gotta do what you gotta do though. College is about being social and meeting people though. Don't spend the best four years of your life looking at a television, videogames are always there, being young and independent for the first time in your life with thousands of other students only happens once. Distraction of having a computer and videogames is only a big deal if you study in your room. Go to the library and problem solved.

Yipes, I'm doing the exact opposite of what you're recommending, I'm perfectly happy playing videogames by myself and having no friends, I'm just a real loner, I just don't like people, I'm really introverted. I never have and don't plan on drinking either, I can't understand at all why people would drink alcohol, but whatever, its their life. College is about being social and meeting people eh? Just not my thing though.

But yeah, you have time to play videogames still in college, its all about moderation though, watch how much you're playing, be careful not to go overboard.

I used to play a lot of video games when I was in high school and my first year of college. I don't really like them anymore though. They are a huge distraction from everything like school, friends, family, etc. unless you're really able to control the video game playing to a few hours a day. Not like I have a social life either though. :P

What do you mean you have no social life? You just said you have friends.
Of course you can play videogames in college, but theres a real, real fine line I would say between normal and too much playing, video games can really suck you in, they are so distracting, same goes for TV, AIM, MySpace, etc.

I think it's more relaxing playing videogames before I study or do work actually, because it helps to make your mind work. Videogames to me are sort of like a "warm-up" for your brain's excerises. I've been playing games since I was 4 years old, ever since I got an NES for the first time. And I love em I'm going to bring my Xbox to college with me lol I can't help it

Im a CE student and spend about 0 hours a week studying for any classes. so I play alot of CS, but i also get paid to play.

lol

I agree, they do stimulate the mind, but you can easily get sucked into that stuff and hey I guess for some it's a good thing.

Some colleges actually have video game leagues...when I went on a tour of Brandeis, one of the things my tour guide bragged about was the fact that they have a Super Smash Brothers league. That helped inspire my application.

What CS team vinny? :)

Although I have to admit, Smash Brothers is the ****.

agreed. My brother started the SSB club at school when i was a frosh. and it continued till my soph. year :-p

I think if you do play video games now to continue playing them...
One, you can't (and shouldn't) study 24/7. Additionally it helps with stress (as if helps distract you). Have a bad day? Go and play some Halo.

fear factor

i used to be a huge computer enthusiast, ie overclocking/modifications and stuff, and a big gamer.

i kinda quit for 6 months this year, and this christmas, i decided to upgrade my comp cause i had nothing else to get for christmas. then when i tried a couple'a games, i realized i really wasn't into them anymore. even with hl2/cs:s, and FEAR at maxed out graphics (still drools over FEAR's graphics)...

Video games? Good god, go to some parties and meet girls. I'm not kidding. It's OK to play madden or halo with your friends every once in a while, but profuse playing of video games is an effin' waste of time.

id say meeting girls is a waste of time.

Video Games=No aids
Girls=Aids

haha, vinny. That was hilarious.

no its actually good b/c they excercise a different part of your brain. so whenever you need a break don't hesistate, play for a bit
