Hi, I want to study Mechanical Engineering one day but I am very weak in math. I’m at a point in life where I have a lot of time on my hands to become proficient at math to where I believe I can get much better at it.When I had my computer, I took courses online and relied on sites like Brilliant.org and a lot others to help me out. I really don’t like having my own personal computer at home as recently battled a bad internet addiction and I got rid of it sadly. After that, I decided to not live without computers and the internet. I only rely on going to the library if I need to browse the web. How essential is having your own personal computer at home if you are studying mechanical engineering as a college student and after college? The thing about relying on going to the library is that they are not open all day but I need lots of time there to practice. Should I not do engineering since I won’t be able to put in the time because I no longer live with my own personal computer? I feel I would be wasting lots of money because I may be excessively failing classes without the time to study at home.
I think it would be difficult today. Many assignments are turned in online, and classmates collaborate online sometimes for projects. Some assignments will require using specific software you might not be able to put on a library computer.
Can you devise ways to limit your access at home? Do you live with parents who can keep the laptop when you aren’t doing homework? Or use software to block the sites you know you are tempted to visit?
The bigger issue isn’t the lack of computer, but your weakness in math. ME is essentially applied Math and Physics. A weak math background would be far more detrimental to your success than your computer situation.
I agree with both of the above posts. Strong math skills are essential and is the first problem. My daughter couldn’t function without her laptop. Almost every assignment is done and submitted online, including her engineering project design courses.
Maybe worth getting some professional help with the internet addiction.
Two kids at different universities… It would be difficult but not impossible to function without a computer at college these days. As stated get help with both math and computer addiction.
