Should I consider taking the SAT in October for a 4th time? I have an 800 in CR, and am fine in writing, but my math score is only in the mid 500s. I think i can bring that up to the low to mid 600s, because that is what im getting in my practice exams. How would the Ivies and other elites view a 4th try. BTW, I have only gotten one test back, but am asking this question on the assumption that my april and may scores wont go up that much, so its hypothetical.

Usually, colleges frown upon applicants taking more than three times, but this is only because statistics show that those who take it more than that tend to stay the same or do worse scorewise. However, if you can improve, as in your case (which is actually hypothetical anyway), then go for it.

You can take the test as many times as you want. Your score report shows your current test score, in addition to scores for up to six SAT and six Subject Test administrations.

I took the test 4 times, but only because my gc told me to. I was also trying to raise my math score. I believe that it was a total waste of my time (and money) to do it again just for ten, twenty, or so more points. But if you feel strongly about this then go ahead. I don't know what colleges will think though.

most colleges take your best combined score. some take your best sitting, but that isnt as common.

my college counselor told me that most places dont care how many times youve taken it. besides, think about it: it looks good to people that you are trying to improve yourself.

you can take it a fourth time, but unless you're an amazing athlete or URM, any section score in the low to mid-600s will almost always make you an auto-reject
