Can you take the Putnam in high school?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you could possibly take the Putnam exam as a high school student if simultaneously enrolled in a college math course.

Thanks!

I doubt it, but if you’re looking for a challenge in math I recommend the AMC/AIME competition.

<a href=“AMC 10/12 | Mathematical Association of America”>AMC 10/12 | Mathematical Association of America;

You need to sign up on a team. When you inquire how to sign up for the team, they will let you know whether or not you can. I think you cannot, but wouldn’t it be so cool? I am assuming you have been to Ross? If you have nothing better going on this summer, you should so totally do it- 6 weeks at Ohio State University, first-years work on number theory; and I predict that you would absolutely love it (though you have probably already gone?).

You do know that the first round of USAMTS is currently open, don’t you, and that it is an “alternate” pathway to USAMO.

If you love competitions, you could compete on “Who wants to be a Mathematician” held at AMS meetings. Look it up on YouTube. I love to watch Evan O’Dorney.

You can take it as long as you’re otherwise eligible (see [here](http://math.scu.edu/putnam/rulescJan.html)), but I wouldn’t recommend it because you’re not allowed to take it more than four times. If you take it now you won’t be able to take it as many times later.

I am curious @abstract1‌, in/near what city do you reside? Do you want suggestions for other resources? You still have so much time before college and have done so much already; Congratulations!

Isn’t that the ridiculously hard and the most difficult math competition in the country?
I think you can only take it if your college offers it. You can only take it four times, but there have been high schoolers in the past that officially attempted it.
I dont know how advanced you are in math but you might want to consider other competitions targeted towards high schoolers like AIME, USAMO, or HMMT

Thanks for all the responses, everyone!

@ItsJustSchool‌ Thanks! I talked to my prof and he says I can sign up, so we’ll see. It would definitely be cool, but I’m wondering if it’s worth sacrificing a year when I’ll be (presumably) more focused on mathematics and less distracted with other coursework.
And re: Ross- I haven’t been, unfortunately. Wanted to apply last year but time got the best of me and I ended up working on a few independent projects/research topics over the summer. I’ll definitely look into it for this year! Thanks for the reminder :slight_smile: Never heard of “Who wants to be a mathematician”- I’ll have to check it out. I would love to hear about suggestions for other resources, for sure. Oh, and I live in a middle-sized city in NJ.

@17Angel‌ Ha yep, that’s what makes it interesting! Personally the Putnam questions seem more intriguing to me than the USAMO ones. And they go into more advanced areas of mathematics (analysis, set theory etc) which is appealing.
