Can you tell me how I will most likely fare in the transfer process?

In high school, I had a 3.2 GPA out of 4 and a 3.5 out of 5. I took 18 honors and 1 AP class (I had also attended one of the best public schools in Boston) I had a very hard time in high school. I had to deal with being in two essentially unsafe households. During my junior year my grades fell dramatically. My mother is very financially deficient. She lives with my grandparents in an apartment because she cannot afford to live on her own and she doesnt have the mental capacity or stability to live on her own. My mother has suffered with depression and anxiety for most of her life and has not taken her medication in years. So she is a mentally unstable person not on her medication. It was not an easy thing to deal with. Junior year she had gotten so crazy to the point where my grandparents and I had tried to commit her to a mental institution (she has been in one three times since I was born). She ended up refusing and it was incredibly stressful for me.

During my life until basically high school I had to deal with my father being abusive towards me. I had kept it quiet and didnt really tell anyone (he was my custodial parent by the way). It kept going on. Once I got to high school my father didnt really "physically abuse me" like he did before, but he was still not a stable person. He suffers from bi-polar disorder, as well as being terminally ill with kidney failure since I was in the fifth grade and was constantly in and out of the hopsital while I was in school. I always had to go through wondering if he was going to live or not. I have kidney disease as well (polycystic).

I was stuck between two bad situtations at both houses.

Now I attend college 1000 miles away from my parents. It has given me the ability and time to really focus on myself and be away from the stressful situations I have had to deal with in high school. As a result, my academic performance is much better.

I currently go to a tier 1 university and I am in the honors program. I have two national board positions for a globally recognized non-profit (which I attained this past July), as well as being the president of a chapter of this at my college in which I started this year. (I had also been involved in high school with this cause very highly, and I was president for two years of the chapter as well as being on the national student leadership team when I was a senior. I was also the first ever student mentor of the entire organization senior year. I had essentially worked my way from the bottom up to get where I am today in terms of my positions) I have done an extreme amount of work in the areas of international affairs and charity work relating to my career. I have lobbied on capitol hill and met with my senators to discuss foreign policy issues. My non-profit board positons focus on international affairs and advocacy (I will not specify the non-profit exactly or give details on the specifics of what we focus on, because otherwise I will give away who I am). My job is a pretty big deal. I get flown out to washington DC four times a year for global conferences and executive board meetings, and I get invited to white house conference calls with white house staffers on a basis of every few weeks.

My career is taking off. I am doing an incredible amount of work in the stuff I want to do as an adult out of school. I have a very high GPA right now around 3.8 or 3.9. Next semester I am taking all upper level classes (I am the only freshman at the university to be allowed to take a 300 level advanced course on international relations focusing on politcal islam and us foreign policy).

I want to transfer, because I feel my current institution is not doing it for me. The social life is very deficient and academically it is not enough. As well as most of the students do not seem to be that motivated.

I am also a minority student (half black)

Everyone says that by transferring to be a sophmore, the colleges will put more weight on the high school grades. However, will this really happen for me? Isnt it quite evident that my performance now, is more indicative of everything?

I am looking at these colleges to transfer:

Harvard
UNC chapel hill
Yale
Columbia
Penn
Tufts
Brandeis
Stanford
Georgetown
Wellesley

Also want to note that my school has three semesters. So therefore by the time I apply to transfer, I will already have completed two semesters and working on my third.

you go to depaul? you sound familiar from your previous threads

no i dont go to depaul. I dont go to school in illionois.

are you sure about that? your story matches 100% with your other username on this site that coincidentally has the same number at the end of the name, ‘Determined23.’
here is an example of one of the threads you have created in the past:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/wellesley-college/1216416-thinking-about-transferring-wellesley.html</a>

i think you should follow the advice given to you in other threads that you have created. your only in your first year of college, and your highschool record and test scores are inadequate for the level of schools you want to attend.

it’s not a good idea to stretch the truth about extracurricular activity, because schools will fact-check things of that magnitude

I am NOT stretching the truth of my extracurricular. The admissions officers can google me and find that out for the first thing that comes up.

You all can believe what you want to believe on this site. You can think I’m not “up there” to those standards. Well fine. Thats your opinion not the truth

my intention isn’t to discourage you. you are asking for your chances at these schools. the answer is, you will not fare well.

your ACT score is under the 10th percentile at quite of a few of those schools, particularly columbia, penn, stanford, yale, and harvard, and your record in highschool is poor. those two things coupled with the fact that you are only in your first year of college is a recipe for disaster.

it’s awesome that you have a unique extracurricular activity and you are half-black, but the #1 thing that these schools will look at is not your soft factors, but your academic ability

can’t I retake my ACT? and cant my high school record be compensated for at all?

When you ask, you should be prepared to hear both positive and negative comments, and accept the input graciously. If you only post to get reenforcement for your already formed opinions, what’s the point?
