Can you transfer from Communication to Business

Was accepted to UP for Fall 2019 into the Communications School. I have read the following on Smeal website with respect to transferring majors…

Must be enrolled at Penn State as a pre-major student in the Smeal College of Business (BA PMAJ) or in the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS PMAJ).

Does this mean I could not transfer to business down the road even if I meet all the business Entrance to Major requirements? Could this be correct?

You could change your pre-major to DUS, and then follow the courses and gpa requirements for business at smeal. You can call them now for reconsideration for DUS or you can switch at orientation/when school starts.

That is absolutely correct, and you won’t be able to GET the entry to major classes unless you are in pre-smeal or you are in DUS. You won’t be approved for the classes from the school of communications. If you want smeal, you have to be either in pre smeal or DUS. That’s it.

If I call them now and ask for reconsideration for DUS and they don’t allow it are you saying I can just change it at orientation? Or can they shoot me down there too. They originally offered 2+2 at Harrisburg for business, but I don’t want a 2+2 program. I asked them to consider me for DUS or Comm at UP thinking it didn’t matter which; clearly it does matter if business is my goal.

Have you been accepted yet? If you’ve been accepted you can just change to DUS at orientation.

was accepted for College of Communications. Called admission today. They said I could be reconsidered for DUS, but it would be another 4 weeks before I heard from them. They also said if I was declined, I could try and switch at orientation but that it was not guaranteed. Confusing

You could most likely switch at orientation, I doubt it would be denied. But never say never.

I’ve never heard of anyone trying to change to DUS at orientation being denied. Just keep your acceptance. You will be able to change to DUS either at orientation or during your first year. My kids have changed their majors a hundred times (only slightly exaggerating  ) I’d leave your acceptance alone at this point with the crazy way admissions was this year.

Be careful. Many of the colleges are moving to NOT allowing changes in the first year, to clamp down on exactly the sort of backdoor that you describe. If you ask to be reconsidered for DUS, you lose the spot in COMM. But there’s no harm in emailing the NSO Office and asking about the ability to change to DUS – things can change a lot, and you want to be sure

Even if they don’t let someone change until the second year, there are plenty of classes that can still be taken I think in the first year that are’t restricted. The following are the entry to major courses: The first four can be taken from any major. The last four you would have to be in DUS or pre smeal.

English Composition (ENGL 015 or ENGL 030)
Calculus (MATH 110 or MATH 140) * #
Microeconomics (ECON 102)
Statistics (SCM 200 or STAT 200) *

Management (MGMT 301) *
Financial and Managerial Accounting (ACCTG 211) *
Marketing (MKTG 301) *
Finance (FIN 301) *

Stay put. Switch at orientation. It’s done all the time.
