You were right. I had the words 'valid' and 'sound' mixed up in relation to syllogisms. I checked it again.

Whatever, it is still not relevent to your first attack against me.

If you think you have something to prove howabout you go prove it at your School. Does it make you feel real good inside to hash it out here on CC? I'm just a stupid community college student, but if I wanted to I suppose I could go buy a LOGIC textbook and sit here for hours arguing over concepts that were proven years ago.

By the way,

"Soundness does not imply validity, though validity does imply soundness."

I think you meant it the other way around.

Just think about it as a corridor with many doors. You don't heve to go to each one of them; just open a door and if you don't like keep on going because you are just a guest. It is not proper to go into one of the rooms and start yelling at people and telling them to go home. Don't click on that link. It is as simple as separation. We can decide how to have fun, beacuse that is exacly what we are having, no matter what it looks like to you. Moreover, since I started this thread , as long as it is ok with the admins, I will be very much happy to hear nsped and janel's debate. If I really though they were polluting I would have asked them politely to stop it. For one, I learned something today.

And this place is dead anyhow.

Guys, I normally don't comment on these types of back and forth bantering on our Harvard applicant threads, but this is getting a little ridiculous.

I think (and hope) we're all here to have our questions answered. I really hope too (...and no, its not just because I'm the friendly Canadian) that we are here to provide a community of support of other people who are in our shoes... applying to big schools and being insecure about it and wondering about our futures. I don't care who's right or wrong about the exact way to define a word in logic. It's not relevant, and it's immature to exchange little jabs like this. From now on, if you want to talk to me, PM me because I don't want to read the ridiculous stuff that's going on in threads like this, it's a disgrace to the idea of attending a world-class institution.

Whatever you say Chief!

These are not 'immature little jabs.' Such a concept is best instantiated by 'Oh yeah? Well your logic stinks because your mom is fat.'

Ohhhh... but was it not this world-class institution that actually contributed significantly to modern logic (Quine, anyone?)?

When persons cannot comprehend something, they immediately cast it as rubbish or immature banter. Such a response is a good defense mechanism, but it is only a palliative at best.

They are immature little jabs. The Philosophy part of my degree is in Logic and Ethics. I know the terms and I can comprehend it, but my point is that its irrelevant to this discussion. At any rate, if you want to reply to this message, why don't you PM me?

There was no insult in my post. That I choose not to prettify my prose with platitudes does not make them "jabs."

Do not even try to assign culpability to me, since I was not the only person who exacerbated this tangent.

Here is an example of an 'immature jab':

Listen kid, the prententiousness in your writing only got you as far as Georgetown, maybe it's time to change?
[/quote]

The reason I will not PM you about this is because I am offended that you should be so presumptuous as to render judgments about maturity. I am simply making public your presumptuousness.

see how many uncommon words you can squeeze into your next post..us idiots are waiting to be awed!

Wow. There are many many many other threads to browse if you guys seriously detest this one. These include some old ones so we don't get the same questions repeated every other day, which I have never said anything about until now, having diligently posted answers as often as I can and to the best of my knowledge. I don't know how some pepople could take things so seriously come here and rekindle things to a thread that has already subsided.
<prech>Once again, enjoy the unbearable lightness of being and do not burden yourselves with everything in this world
There is a small group of people here on the transfer board, including myself, nspeds, and Janel89, that has a passion for debate and gets into it whenever the oportunity presents itself. I think that it beats the hell out of being judgemental, however. If I could, I would change the topic of the thread to "Intense debate; PG-13-state-of-mid people please avoid." Then maybe you would know what to expect and deter yourselves from coming here and acting appalled by the lack of constructive advice.
{The fact that the three of us can argue for two days and get heated, but still not attack each other and be civil} when compared to {your aggressive affront, borderline derisive remarks, and lack of civility induced merely by two postings} suggests that you are in fact the one who should follow your own advice and stay out of arguments.</prech>

Even I was very insulted by the Georgetown comment. This is ridiculous.

P.S. Even though I am though I am the one arguing with nspeds here, I still think that he contributes greatly, as he was the one to answer most of my questions when I first came here.

Martinibluex~
I am sorry if this was a proper debate, I got the impression that nspeds was (like usual) slitting his wrist over nothing.

I will promptly exit this thread, and upon reflection, my comment was very immature. I do however, wish nspeds would stop using so many SAT words in an online forum (hey, I studied those words, I know what they mean... a few SAT words here and there are charming enough but your posts over-do it by a factor of (insert synonym for a "big amount" from the thesaurus here).

*waits for nspeds to find a grammatical error in my post so he can feel big.

I am sure that nspeds just loves what he does (philosophy) so much that he cannot dissociate himself from it... Incorporating proper words is just a part of being articulate after all.

y17k, I didn't know the comment was from you; I didn't see it posted earlier and I somehow thought that he got it thorugh a PM....
I have talked to you before and I believe that all of our conversations have been pleasant. Please, don't take this personaly.
I don't want anybody leaving... you can all contribute to the debate but if you don't like the idea please don't attack us. I am a very peaceful person, as hard as it is to believe. I just miss debate, as I used to often into it with my friends, who now live in different parts of the world
I also like posting my stats which inevitably leads to trouble as well.
:)

to nspeds: how did you elete the quotes that I asked you to? that was a pretty nice gesture. if you have time, please let me know how to edit posts after the 20 minutes have passed.

Npeds - have you perhaps entertained the notion that your prolific use of fancy words actually makes you seem less intelligent?

I said this before and will say this again: I am not a wiseacre. Some persons actually have a better vocabulary than you, slipper; perhaps instead of faulting them you could do something more productive with yourself.

I am a logophile, and I also happen to be a "grammar Nazi". My writing is not an affectation, it is a hobby; just like some prefer to collect stamps or draw or play the piano, I love to play with words and analyze grammar. Different persons have... different interests; I know that proposition is not worthy of the Nobel Prize, but I think it needs to be belabored among some of you.

Edit: I know I did not say this before, slipper1234, and I tend to think you are intelligent, but you have done this on so many occasions that it warrants noting: my username is spelled n*s*peds.

I actually do not have the slightest clue, since I did not delete them. I suppose a moderator did something.

For a "grammar Nazi," yours isn't that great.
