I'm leaving the frigid Quebec nest in a month for Columbia in NYC. Aside from tripping acid from the excitement it's also very nerve-wracking to be leaving your friends and family behind.

So I'm looking for a cellphone plan (American or Canadian) that would allow me to call home- ideally without restraints or for a few hundred minutes a month.

I know Verizon used to have one but that ended a few years ago.

Any suggestions?

I'm in the situation. Verizon actually has it again. It's called Nationwide plus Canada.

60$ a month and not even unlimited...yikes too rich for my blood.

I may invest in an unlocked (gasp!) iPhone and use an voip system for (nearly) free internationals to my parents & friends landlines.

I might recommend a pre-paid phone, where you just go to a regular store and buy a phone, and then buy the minutes on cards as you need them. If you're only calling home, that will be enough. But if you're like most college students in the US, you'll be on your cell phone day in and day out. In that case, it may be best to find an unlimited plan that works for you.
