Hey guys,
My math teacher recently introduced me this camp called "Canada/USA Math Camp" and on the brochure, it looked like a pretty interesting and fun way to spend summer. The camp lasts about 5 weeks so it's a bit longer than I expected. (which is making my decision harder..) But since I do enjoy discussing and challenging myself with math and science stuff, as far as the quality of the camp is good, I'd like to apply for it. Has anyone been to this camp or have anything to share with me to help my desicion?? Thanks in advance!!

Camp fee of $3195? Well, at least there's an automatic tuition reduction if the household income is less than $100K.

Go! It is a very very fun experience.

I'm a '04 camper and it was really fun, exciting, and intellectually stimulating. Basically, there are 5 "periods" to a day, and you can choose to go to all 5 (not recommended, as you will know on the first day of camp), or to none (also not recommended). Topics range from cryptography (challenging), abstract algebra (fun), topology, game theory (intriguing), AMC/AIME/USAMO prep, number theory, and much more! Classes end in the afternoon, and there are a variety of nighttime activities and free time. The daily schedule is very much self-determined and non-binding. However, there is a lot to learn at camp if you're willing to do so. On weekends the staff conduct hikes, excursions, rafting escapades, or trips to surrounding cities or points of interest. Also, through the duration of the camp, you get to meet many people who share a similar enthusiasm for math. I personally still keep in contact with many people I met at Mathcamp.

Most notably, Mathcamp conducts a "puzzle hunt" similar to MIT's annual puzzle hunt. The staff draws up an ingenious series of puzzles (with help from last year's winning team) and competing teams are given as much time as they need to find the "treasure." When I was there, the hunt ended approximately 17 hours after the starting time though I was informed that a previous hunt lasted well over 30 consecutive hours. It is by far the most engaging activity in the course of the camp (oh, and of course, there's the problem solving contests) and I would gladly go back to Mathcamp just to participate in their Puzzle Hunt again.

In sum, it is a very rewarding summer and I would strongly encourage application to the camp. Don't worry about the cost -- their financial aid is generous. Just remember it to mention it on your app.

ps. There are several campers that return year after year. Perhaps that fact bears some explanation to the attractiveness of Mathcamp.
