Just thought I'd start a thread for the Canadians who are applying to American schools this year! Feel free to introduce yourself, tell us which province you're from, and which schools you're applying to.

I'll start: I'm calgirl15. I'm a Canadian in terms of citizenship, but I've lived all over the world and have traveled to over 25 countries to date. Although I was born in Ontario and spent a year living in Montreal, I don't have very many ties to Canada now besides the fact that some of my family members still live there. I enjoy foreign languages, traveling, reading about international affairs, studying physics, and Chinese calligraphy. I was actually also a 2015 applicant, but took a gap year for various reasons and will be re-applying this year.

My schools: Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, UPenn, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, Duke, and Northwestern. I'm also applying to McGill as a backup school (trying for a renewable scholarship). As you can tell by my insanely competitive choices, my personality is also tinged with a slight hint of masochism and a streak of insanity. ;)

Vancouverite my whole life!! Applying to many of the same schools as you as well as UBC, Queen’s, Western, and Waterloo! I’ll be happy in either the states or canada.

Most annoying question my friends ask knowing I’m applying all over the place: “Where are you going next year?” To which I respond, “Ask me again in may!”

Haha, that question annoys me so much. I forgot to mention - in addition to the schools I listed in my opening post, I also submitted an application to University of Cambridge (UK) - mostly due to parental pressure. I’m not really interested in going to England, even though I was at Cambridge for a summer program and found it rather nice. :)

I finished my Common App essay (it’s pretty much the final version now) and am close to submitting my Duke, Northwestern, Harvard, and Yale supplements. I also have drafts of answers for Stanford and Brown. Are you applying for McGill’s renewable scholarships? My response to the first essay question is basically my Common App essay, but I’m having a hard time writing about myself in so little space for the second prompt…

I’m going ED for Columbia and also apply RD for HYP (mostly because of parents), Berkeley, Duke, and UPenn. For Canada, it’s McMaster, Queens, McGill and Waterloo (no UofT since I’ve lived in Toronto for practically my entire life)

I’m editing my common app essay and haven’t started my Columbia supplement yet :S life is so busy glsfjksldf

anybody applying to the big scholarships here? (I am! lol)

November 1st is a mere 10 days away! Has anyone submitted anything yet? Just got done submitting supplements for 3 of my schools… oh yeah, and I’m no longer applying to Cornell and Brown. That makes a total of 10 schools for me, including McGill and Cambridge.

Yay for fellow 2016 Canadian applicants! I’m also a Vancouverite, and quite proud of it. I’m applying to UCLA, USC, UCD and maybe a couple more. As for the east, I’m gunning for NYU or Fordham. If all else fails, I hope to UBC or U of T. If by some miracle I get into McGill, then that would be terrific. My mom went there and would be ecstatic if I attended as well.

@lanz17: Are you a dual citizen? If not, I hope you come from an affluent family. I don’t believe that any of the American schools you listed offer need based financial aid to international students. Merit aid at those schools is extremely competive. Tuition alone, even out of state tuition, is in the $40,000/year range.

tomofboston: No, I am not. It is really unfortunate that the American schools that I want to attend do not offer need based financial aid to international students. My parents understand how terrible expensive tuition is to attend any of them and have told me that if I got in, they would pay for it. I will definitely feel bad if I actually attend one of them and end up costing them thousands of dollars, but I guess I will just have to make up for it by working hard. :)

@lanz17: There is really no academic reason to attend those US schools. You can get just as good an education at McGill, UBC, Toronto or Queen’s. It appears your reason is that you want to study in the US. Also, if your parents can afford to pay $50,000 plus per year for tuition, room and board, you would not qualify for need based aid even if it were available. Need based aid in the US is based on family income.
