Canadian Chances?

Chinese-Canadian, immigrated in Grade 5. I'm only in grade 10, but I know what I'll have. I was out of the English-As-a-Second-Language program, and into the normal stream less than a year after I came to Canada, compared to the average length of 2-3 years, but I don't know where to bring that up...

Hardest courses possible, heavy in English/Math/Social Science, with advanced Physics. No music or foreign language, although I will probably get perfect on the Chinese SAT II.
3.9 GPA
Class rank 3/400

I got 650s on the SAT I in a practice test in Grade 9...so I'll probably end up with ~750 when I take them next year. I got 12 (perfect) on a practice essay at PrincetonReview.com for the writing component. I'll be taking the Math, Physics, American History, World History, Chinese and maybe Literature SAT IIs. All of them should be in the 700s.

I'm a pretty good writer, so the Essay should at least be memorable.

Swim lifeguard certification

Editor, Yearbook
Student Rep, School Council (the boring one - meeting with parents)
Treasure, Student Council (the fun one - student activities)
Co-ordinator at student-run volunteering agency, which matches students to volunteering opportunities year-round. Six students are chosen from Grade 11 and 12 to run it each year.
Duke of Edenburg Award

Working since Grade 10, will continue through Grade 12.

So...what chances do I have at Yale?

P.S. Are there less selective universities that offer need-blind admission to Canadian students? I'm poor, and HYP are the only ones (as far as I know) that would offer real financial aid to me, ie, not overloaded with loans vs grants. Yale is a looong shot though.

Canadian? Apply to all three schools (HYP) with two 10 minute intermissions to clean the ice.

id say that u have basically no chance

you need to chill out, wait till your a junior before you give yourslef a heart attack

where r u from? which school u go to?

um did you say you got a 750 on the sat 1? Are you forgetting a section or something? Cause a 750 is going to get you into a community college.

dan112931 id say that u have basically no chance
Ah well...I kinda realized it, but thanks for telling the (harsh) truth. I'll take my shot nonetheless, it can't hurt.

morgan7710 you need to chill out, wait till your a junior before you give yourslef a heart attack
Thanks for the advice. I just couldn't resist myself, after seeing all the others out there. You are right, it's not that urgent.

Newbyreborn where r u from? which school u go to?
I live in Toronto. Sh...I'm not telling which school.

icyfire um did you say you got a 750 on the sat 1? Are you forgetting a section or something? Cause a 750 is going to get you into a community college.
...750 on each of the sections. Out of 800. So by 750 I mean 1500/1600 on the old SAT, and 2250/2400 on the new one.

dude ur goin to a community college he said i got 650ssssss meaning 2

Hey brother. I am also a current sophomore from Canada applying to select top tier colleges by the end of my senior year.

From your extracurriculars, I've participated in all of those (Silver in Duke of Edinburgh's) and more; trying to reach outward from what's offered at Ontario schools.

Speaking of which, Ontario schools don't offer much. Infact, the level of extracurricular's you've demonstrated have exceeded most Canadians. Americans tend to take much much more of the extracurriculars so don't worry about your school offerings.

I suggest you try to do something unique; something extraordinary. And I'm not saying those Math contests (Fermat, Cayley) because although they are a good tool for Top Tier recruitment, I'd be willing to bet you'd get wooped in Math contests. Sadly, the Ontario Secondary Schools promote these types of competitions the most.

I'd also suggest you self-study AP. Doing so is extremely difficult. Most Ontario schools do not have AP, so if you self-study; you'll gain some much needed college.

And new rule: Don't count on your essays yet until I've read them. LOL.

From a Canadian perspective, you are right on track. Just pump up outside the box. The Top Tier schools accept about 100 Canadians total to their schools every year. You could be one of them. There're people worse than you who make it to these schools; and I'm glad you care this early. Because most Canadians in the New Curriculum don't. However if you were American, I'd have to say you're a so-so.

Remember, try to get some radical EC's. Like awesome summer programs and competitions; I assure you, you'll have lots of fun! And that's what it's all about!
