Here is the latest update from my parents: They think I should defer acceptance to all schools until the PR decision comes down. Why? I have no idea. They say parents can’t understand their children these days but having parents that aren’t familiar with the Canadian educational/immigration systems it goes in saying that in this case the child has no clue what the parents are thinking. Would anyone be so kind as to explain to me what their rationale is? What are the pluses and minuses? Does it make any sense to you that they are literally asking me to defer a year for a PR decision that may end up wasting a year and returning a PR rejection. Why doesn’t the CIC take into consideration these special cases? This is the most important decision of my educational experience and it’s been more than two years since we’ve heard anything from immigration. The waiting period anxiety has been excruciating. Canada desires bright students but if you drag them over broken glass for years and put them in the position I’m in now, then you’ll end up with damaged goods that resent the whole process and end up looking elsewhere for a good home. Thank you.

My parents have noted the Quebec PEQ fast-track program which takes less than a year to immigrate. So in view of the above, there is no need to defer for McGill. Fast-track on the PEQ application. Am I making any sense here?
If there are any Canadian official experts lurking on this thread, please offer your advice on how to proceed from here. My deadline to accept an offer from McGill is only 4 days from today. Thank you.
Look at any med school’s “admissions/eligibility” page from Ontario. You’ll see two cases: no in-province preference of any kind (eg., UT) or province of residence as defined by HS you graduated from/where parents live NOT where you went to college for undergrad (eg., Western).
@purflower888 One possible explanation for your parents’ wish to have you wait until you are a permanent resident is cost. As an international student, your tuition fees are much much higher than if you are a permanent resident. As permanent resident, you would also be eligible for OSAP which could bring the cost down further.
We made a family decision and declined McGill, UT, McMaster, Queens and others in the same quality bracket and chose Western Medical Science on scholarship as a high school nominee. I’ve skipped a grade and we thought it would be more productive to start university at a young age in case we don’t receive a PR and I spend that bonus year in graduate school immersed in my favorite subject, biochemistry. I believe Western will open many doors for me, possibly medical school and their graduate programs and medical science curriculum will prepare me for an excellent fallback career in researching cures for humanity. Thank you all for your kind advice and consideration.
@purflower888 I may be a bit biased, but as a Western alum (see my avatar) I disagree that UWO is not in the same bracket, at least in terms of Canadian rankings, as the schools you have turned down. Your chances of admission to med school are just as good attending Western as at those other schools. Congratulations on your decision. It’s a wonderful school.
Congratulations!
Do keep us updated later on, as it might help other students in similar situations.
@gwnorth Acutally, we do believe Western is in the same bracket but their undergraduate medical science program, medical school ranking and medical school student satisfaction tops.
