Hi! So I’m a student in Ontario looking to apply to schools in the states. My overall average is 89%, though I’m currently in the IB Programme at my school and my transcript shows both “converted” and “unconverted” grades (in the first semester of our IB courses, our grades aren’t adjusted according to the IB’s 7-point scale, and in the second semester it is, so it’s a little weird). Just out of curiosity, I checked out foreigncredits.com and it says that my GPA is a 3.88, though a ton of other websites say that an 89% definitely doesn’t convert to a 3.88, so I am a little confused right now. Are there any Ontario students that have applied to the States who know how schools would see my GPA?
To touch a little bit more on the “converted” and “unconverted” grades for IB:
Here is a slightly outdated grade conversion:

IB doesn’t give out percentage grades, just levels, so it is up to my school to give out % marks and teachers to predict our marks. However, you don’t necessarily need a 99% to be predicted a grade of 7 in a class; Ontario has adjusted boundaries for each class. So, for example, in Math SL an 85 and above would be a 7. After exams, if the IB grades my overall as a 7, it will be adjusted to a 96-100 depending on where I fall in the 7 range. Therefore, in my first semester of Math SL, my report card shows an 85 but my second semester Math grade shows a 97. The grades are only adjusted, but the 85 from first semester brings my average down.
I was just wondering how universities will see it?
US schools don’t convert your percentage to a GPA. They evaluate it as it appears on your high school transcript. You should ask your guidance counsellor about what exactly they put on your transcript.
Most US universities are familiar with the Canadian grading system. They will evaluate your app compared to other Canadians. What schools are you aiming for?
In your other thread you say you have a 3.95 UW GPA… An 89% Ontario average is far less than a 3.95!
@OrchidBloom I’ll make sure to ask when school starts!
@TomSrOfBoston Stanford, the UCs, and U Chicago. I’m majorly confused by converting percentages to GPA I get different results from different places hence the different GPAs lol
An 89% would not get you into many programs at McGill or Queen’s, let alone elite US schools.
There is not enough information to answer this question if he is applying to schools with holistic admissions.
Why do you bother to give out terse, uninformed, inaccurate information, Tom? Why aren’t you day trading?
