Canadian Rockies in summer

It’s about time to start planning next summer’s vacation. lol Who has been to the Canadian Rockies in the summer? Is there enough to do for 2 weeks? Mr. Groundhog and youngest offspring love hiking. I like exploring and wildlife photography. I was looking at Jasper National Park and Banff National Park, but I’ve heard that Banff is way too crowded and I should look at Yoho and Glacier (Canadian one) instead. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!

plenty to do for all your interests, yes very crowded - any chance you could go in Sept … is that still summer for you ?

You can look beyond the parks to places like Emerald Lake as well.

Personally, I love summer in this part of world, and with the really long days, it feels like you get a more of it each day. Just be prepared to go home exhausted!

I’ve been to Banff twice, but not in the last 10 years. If you’re hitting two parks then I’d say enough to do for sure. Emerald Lake and Moraine Lake are both great places to hikes/stay. We kayaked in Moraine Lake, and several of us jumped into the 37 degree water, at Emerald lake I believe.
We also stayed at a remote mountain lodge in the Purcell Mountains. You have to helicopter or hike in.

Watertown Park (which is Canadian portion of Glacier) is quite lovely and was nice when we were there in July. It wasn’t very crowded when we were there.

Waterton Lakes National Park. The little town of Waterton, AB was very neat.

We were there in mid-August years ago and it snowed at our campsite at Lake Louise! It was beautiful!

I really wanted to drive up the Icefields Parkway, but broke a vertebra getting thrown off a horse while doing a ride around Bow Lake and we had to bug out.

H dud a tubing trip on the Kicking Horse River while I was in a hot tub trying to calm down my back. He said it was a wild ride!

Icefields is still on my bucket list. Would love to go back to the Canadian Rockies and do at least part of the rail trip while we’re up there.

Oh yeah - we did rafting on our first trip there too. Had to wear wetsuits, but it was fun. When we were there it got very warm during the day, but the week before it had snowed quite a bit. We were on a bike trip, so I’m really glad it stopped snowing. The people the week before were probably not so happy.
