Canadian Schools

if u had a choice between mcgill uft and western for A BUSINESS DEGREE with a career in accoutancy.. which1??

IMO western!!

Don't forget Queen's... its business program has a great reputation. I've also heard that Western is good too.

Could anyone rank the following schools in terms of the difficulty of the premed program, or the school in general (i.e. are ppl cut-throat? difficult to get high GPA? etc). Thanks!

McGill, McMaster, Queens, Toronto, Western (abc order)

You might want to search around the postings of CC when it was in its old format (prior to October 2004) for some opinions on this. There is a "Message Search" link on the left side of the page to use. Here are some example discussions:

You can no longer post there, but you can read & search OK.

The general themes I read from there seem to be that:

since they are government-supported, Canadian schools are not dramatically different from each other

Canadian schools are grade deflated compared to the US and this might be detrimental for applying to US law schools and med schools

McGill has a top reputation for its med school and perhaps for pre-med

Queen's is highly considered for sciences

UofT for research

Does anyone know how McGills programs in Middle Eastern Languages and Intenational Relations are?

So I'm checking back in while my daughter still awaits word on her fate from UBC. They have all of her materials and the message says "ready for evaluation, will let you know..." Have any of you prospective students heard from them yet? She did get a "yes" from Victoria and Simon Fraser. I would like more info on Victoria if any of you experts have it? Many thanks!!!

My mother, an English major, graduated from UVic and said a lot of her professors were top-notch... but that was a long time ago.

Re: McGill Middle Eastern studies and Industrial relations.

Both departments are small but have a group of loyal student followers. Industrial relations is getting so small that it is in the process of fearing possible extinction-- however, new interest is most welcome. Industrial relations prepares you more for a career in human resources.

www.ausmcgill.com has a page with contact info on individual department student associations.

Back to UBC, again...do any of you experts know if UBC posts the acceptance (or not) on the "application status", or doesn't, and uses the mail only. The message has been "ready for review, will send a letter"....thank you!!! (SFU and Victoria posted online)

Hi sglass,
I am from Vancouver and I am a big fan of UBC although I want to be an American!!!If you need any help feel free to ask me regarding your daughter.

Are mcgill decisions posted online?

Do most people applying to Canadian schools(Mcgill, Waterloo, and UT), have some background in French? I know that it classes are taught in English...but how important is speaking French?

nil

<10 characters>

it is not necessary to know the French language but it is obviously useful especially when you are in Quebec(McGill)

French is nice but not a necessity in Montreal. I speak it pretty well but i have friends (canadians, even) who don't speak it at all. Generally if possible I use english.

McGill decisions are posted online via the Minerva program :)

I applied and was accepted to Uvic...i know someone going there for piano performance who absolutely loves it, and my parents know an alum. who also really enjoyed his time there.

McGill is very cool. I like it a lot :D

noelle

Why does Memorial get so little attention?

just to let you guys know the basic applicatin in Canada is much easier. The supplementary applications are a little more on par with the American application. Like my basic application to Richard Ivey was just done online.. simple they have most of hte info from your school on your address etc. but hte supplementary was like 20-30 pages :)

and yah Canadian schools are much easier to receive acceptance.. I have early from Schulich, Ivey, Laurier... Will undoubtfully get the rest because I'm way above cut off. This semester average was 98% (Top mark at school this smeester... probably top 3 or so throuhgout the year). Huge EC list. Horrible SAT scores.

I have a bunch of interviews for national scholarships at university, government etc..

but I was rejected from all the US Ivys so...

Im an American who will graduate from Ontario....I was arrogant so i blew the SAT and im on a bunch of waitlists...thus im starting to really consider canada, but ive heard UofT and McGill are the only uni's reputable in the states...Im more of a small-town, mid-sized town kid so i prefer Western and Queen's

How are Western and Queens in terms of returning to American for grad school?

There are reports that many people from Ivey at Western get into HBS due to the similiar style teaching methods etc.

anyone know how hard premed is at UBC?
