Canadian students: Working at a Campus Bar Good for Improving Social Life?

I'm in my second year of undergrad and for the longest time I've had no social life. I have quite a few acquaintances, but none of them could rightly be called friends because I don't talk to them or do anything with them outside of school. I don't go to bars, parties, clubs or anything of the sort. I'm seeking to change this now.

While at one of the campus bars last night with a circle of friends that I'm acquainted with but not truly a part of, one of these acquaintances - the one who was responsible for this particular get-together - was telling me about his job at this bar. He's a bartender there (or something like that, I can't quite remember), and said I could probably get to that same position in a couple months if I wanted to.

My questions go to those who have experience in working at campus bars during their undergrad (which is why this question is directed to Canadian students):

To what extent does it help or hurt your social life?

Does the fact that you work during weekend nights hinder your ability to socialize with your existing friends, or does it help?

Did it allow you to make new friends and expand your social circle?

Most importantly, would you recommend it to somebody in my position (lack of social life, only a few loose circles of acquaintances) to improve their social life and get real friends?
