Canadian thread...calling all Canucks

dlesk,
Yeah I'm with TD too right now. I posted this in the Parents forum, and got quite a few good responses, including one from the parent of a current Penn student. Will have to do some more research in the coming months, but now I've got an idea of where to start.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/496431-questions-re-bank-accounts-students.html

^^ See my response in that thread. If you use Scotiabank you can withdraw U.S. dollars from your Canadian dollar Scotiabank account using Bank of America ATMs without paying ATM or international service fees. The reverse also works (withdrawing Canadian dollars from your Bank of America U.S. dollar account using a Scotiabank ATM in Canada)

Hey, i'm from Canada as well...another ivy hopeful xD...vicente, you're from mississauga? same here =)

As I responded in the Parents' forum thread, I used TD in Canada and opened a BoA account here at Princeton. It probably would've been easier to just use the Scotia/BoA combination (from whichever angle you choose to approach it) but I don't know whether I'm staying in America or going back to Canada after college and want to keep my options open.

hey 1of42 =)...i'm vieing for Princeton...do you have any advice?

i got in UBC with a 5k scholarship but im headin down to UCLA...:)

My daughter is attending NYU this fall, she was accepted at Boston Conservatory, Sheridan College & AMDA. Hard decision to make because of US costs, and she was offered scholarship money for Canadian school too.
I have a question about Medical Insurance, does anyone know what the best route is? Should we purchase it through NYU or is it cheaper to find your own?

@ VAN 2010, what were your stats?

I'm in Alberta. Considering Stanford, Berkeley, and some others. Also looking at McGill.

Has anyone here gone through McGill's admissions process? I know they have minimum marks, but realistically what kind of marks do you need for an acceptance?

@chrisvahanian.. what kind of marks did you have? ECs? SAT scores? I'm in Alberta but I really want to go to UCLA haha

guys what kind of courses did you take in high school?you didn't all take IB did you? is AP even available in Canada? I always thought you have no chance of getting in if you take normal public school courses. is this true?

where do you want to go? ivies .. yeah you would probably need AP haha
i'm partial IB i don't know about everyone else..
and a school in my city offers some AP courses

how far back in the rankings would you have to go before they start accepting normal classes (still hard classes but not IB, I tried IB, the isolation didn't work for me and I had no time for independent learning and i was expected to know french already which i didn't)

i hate IB with my life... haha. your right, they expect you to know everything already so the instruction is practically nil
anyways I don't really know... it depends what your grades are like probably :S

my lowest mark this year (grade 11) so far is an 87% in Physics(this is before exams) my other four marks this semester are from 90% - 94%

also another reason i chose to get out of IB was it is only 2 years old at my school. this year is the first graduating IB class. the course selection is VERY limited

Soon will be a Canuck

so you ALL took IB to some extent?

your marks are really good! i'm IB but my marks from this semester before exams (same as you) are: math 30 IB - 94
chem 25 IB - 85
bio 20 IB (ewwww..) - 82 (wah)
social 20 IB - 88
not ivy league material or anything.. but i'm not aiming for ivies.. haha

they're not that good, I didn't take IB

One of my friends here at Penn never took AP/IB although it was because his school didn't offer it, so he simply took the highest level of courses that were available (honours classes I guess) If however AP/IB is offered at your school and you choose not to take any courses, it will be more difficult to get in to top ranked schools, because it will look like you are not challenging yourself.

CDN_dancer what were your SAT scores and high school marks like if you don't mind telling me? Penn is one of my huge reaches so I'm just wondering
