Canadian universities

Hello guys . I wanted to get your opinion r and your advice. I am an international student living in the middle east , my school follows the American high school correculum. Well my grades are verry good I have always been an A student yet my SAT score is 1600/2400.
I wanted to get a bachelors degree in CS and i thought of a couple of universities eg york, UOT, dalhousie, concordia, manitoba and victoria. What are my chances to get into one of these and any help is appreciated

Canadian universities are almost purely stats driven. U of T is out of reach. The other schools are less selective and may be within reach. Computer science has become very popular as a major and the schools will take the applicants with the highest GPA or other stats. It’s best to contact each university directly as their requirements depend on your country, whether or not English is spoken in the home or the school, and the system of education at your school.

I don’t believe Canadian unis necessarily look at SATs, do they? UVic came on son’s radar screen because it has a specific program and location he likes a lot; I also like the surprisingly good cost. The big downside for us is that they don’t guarantee housing unless you’re straight from high school, and then only for one year. (He’s taking a gap year and I just don’t see living off-campus right off the bat in an unfamiliar place.) Anyway it’s a bit unclear to me but SATs only seem to apply to US schools.

Canadian universities will look at SAT scores if you send them in. They may also want to see either AP scores or SAT subject tests. (Or is that British universities… I can’t remember.)

Most schools have specific requirements per country. Here are York’s requirements: http://futurestudents.yorku.ca/requirements/hs_intl_countries

Most universities should be similar, but to double check a quick look at their admissions page should help you find what you’re looking for.

And I don’t think U of T is out of reach. With a perfect SAT score, you should be an excellent candidate.

I read the OP’s SAT scores as 1600 out of 2400.

Sorry, didn’t mean they’d refuse to look at SATs at all, just that they’re not required. So basically all of Canada is “test optional” for SATs. (Well, maybe not, but from what I can tell.)

No actually UVic requires Sat minimum 1760

Really? Where does it say that? Didn’t find it on the site.

Right. What I said

“SAT scores (of at least 1760), composite ACT scores (of at least 26) and other supplementary information may also be considered if submitted.”

Reading to the end of the sentence, it says “may also be considered if submitted.” So it does NOT need to be submitted. As I read the requirements in the link, if you have a 3.5 GPA you’re a guaranteed admit to most programs; if you’re between 3.0 and 3.5 and think your SAT scores might help, or if you think the SAT is just a fun thing to send along because why not, you’re free to do it. They MAY consider it. In which case I guess it better be 1760 or up. But it’s never actually required for anyone, it seems.

I wish people would not post unless they know the facts. Many Canadian universities require either the SAT or ACT for AMERICAN applicants or overseas applicants following an American curriculum. McGill and UToronto certainly do. At McGill the minimum SAT scores range from 1790 to 2040 depending on the program.

OP, look up the requirements on each school’s website instead of asking uninformed CCers. .

Tom, In my world it’s OK to ask questions, and it’s OK for others to do their best to answer them. I spoke specifically of only ONE school, and being extremely clear that I’m not an expert. OP did read the web page, but hadn’t read it correctly. He’s a non native speaker. BTW, McGill and U of T’s policies don’t necessarily reflect all other Canadian unis. Just saying. But I still think it’s OK for you to post.
