Hiya
So I've been admitted into the Faculty of Arts prog at Queens and I plan on majoring in Economics. I've been admitted into the Arts and Business prog at Waterloo. I'm not sure which 1 is better.. and I would really appreciate all the advice. Thanks

Queen’s Commerce and Business program is rated #1 outside of the US by Businesssweek, so there you go. Now all you have to do is figure out which city’s lifestyle suits you more.

^ Um, he was admitted to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, not the School of Business.

Anyway, if prestige is of any concern to you, Queen’s is always ranked top three in Canada, while Western is usually ranked ~10. Moreover, Queen’s has one of the most highly regarded Economics MA programmes in the world, which means that the economics faculty are engaging in important research. If you’re serious about economics and are considering graduate school, I’m sure you’d be able to get one of them to write you a letter of reference.

Lastly, London is lame; Kingston is kool.

Arts & Science in Economics so I assumed that he’ll be on the Business road, which Queen’s is better for throughout the process.

^ You have no clue what you’re talking about. The quality of the School of Business will have no bearing on the education he receives in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences: the two are separate entities that have different professors, curricula, and reputations.

He wasn’t talking about the University of Western Ontario, he was talking about the University of Waterloo. The Arts and Business program is a pretty decent program depending on what you want to get into in the future. That’s one thing you really should think about in order for you to succumb to an appropriate decision. Because Economics at Queen’s is in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, despite the fact that it’s technically considered a “business course”, economics has the arts twist to it - just like the Arts and Business program. Both are excellent schools. Personally? I definitely like the overall atmosphere at Queen’s A LOT better than at Waterloo.

Right. My mistake, but the rest still stands.

Economics in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences is not “technically considered a ‘business course.’” Economics is a liberal arts course that deals primarily with theory, not practical business applications. That being said, you will find that the world’s top business schools admit more people from economics programs than from undergrad business programs. Undergrad business courses are generally a waste of time if you’re looking to continue your education; grad schools and b-schools don’t look highly upon them.

Do yourself a favour and go to Queen’s. It has a much better reputation, more important faculty, and a much more fun social scene. The reputation will help when applying to b-schools or grad schools.
