I am a high school junior in New York who is very interested in attending college in Canada. I’ve tried to find gpas and sat scores for so many schools (mainly University of Ottawa and Concordia in Montreal) but I cannot find any numbers online. I would be starting fall of 2018 as a political science major. I have a 95% average and a 1250 on the sat which will be going up once I take it again. Do I have a chance?? I can’t find any numbers so I don’t know if I’m way out of their range or within it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
I would say that for a competitive university like UBC/Queen’s/UofT/McGill, a recommended amount for Arts is a 3.6-3.7 GPA and a 12xx SAT score.
What does your 95% average translate to? In the US, they use GPA, so I’m assuming a 3.9-4 GPA.
Regardless, you are probably certain to get into the universities that you have mentioned. However, you may want to improve your SAT score to around 1300-1350.
A 1250 would make you marginal for Arts at McGill.
I think that you are in good shape for Ottawa and Concordia. You would need to pull your SAT up a little bit for McGill, and probably for Queens or Toronto or UBC. SAT preparation can be very useful.
My daughter had an average grade of about 94% and 1410 (superscored) on the two-part SAT and was accepted to McGill a few years back. The way that her high school computes weighted GPA and for the courses that she took this translated to just barely better than 4.0 weighted GPA. I am pretty sure that she would have been accepted to any university in Canada. Of course this can vary from year to year, and I am not sure to what extent things like references and numbers of APs taken would matter.
Are you a Canadian citizen or permanent resident? If so they cost won’t vary much between universities. If not, then definitely look at the cost for international students. There are a lot of very good universities in Canada and the price varies considerably for international students (probably by about a factor of two, currently from about $30,000 to just over $60,000 in Canadian dollars).
