<p>I live in canada and am currently thinking about what US schools I might apply to. I would love to go to the top US schools. On the other hand they are hard to get into so I also want to look at some less well know/more realistic American school. Howver, as you know, canada does have three excellent schools ranked in the top 100 in the world: U of T, mcgill and UBC. At what point to you think it's not worth going for american universities anymore? What American school do you think are worth striving for and at what point do you think the Canadian universities have equal or better quality of education/reputation as the american ones? I've seen the international rankings, but they are not always reliable. I want to hear your opinions and actually name the colleges where you would mark the cut off!</p>
<p>It really depends on the subject of study and personal preference! UofT, UBC, McGill and Queen's are all terrific schools, even though they are far from being in the ranks of HYPS.
However, if you were to choose between Cornell or UofT or Upenn or McGill, that really depends, YOu could go to the states and pay that high price (i hear fin. aid doesn't give you too much) or you could go to canadian school and let scholarships cover your expenses. While i would prefer going to an Ivy league school over the canadian ones, many people disagree w/ me. Some of my friends at U of T gave up Upenn, Duke, Cornell etc. and after some years of study, they feel that they had made the best choice possible. They all told me "yes those are ivies and good schools they have given up, but they felt U of T is also good (so are McGill, UBC and Queen's)". It highly depends on your preferences :)</p>

<p>UT is ranked 23rd or something like that on the int'l ranking of universities in the world (including us schools) while UBC is at the 36th/32nd.</p>
<p>I would still choose a US school over a CANADIAN one if they are somewhat at the same quality levels JUST BECAUSE it's nice to experience something new (I go to highschool in Canada)</p>

<p>imo, US schools worth of giving up Canadian schools for: HYPSM, schools ranked between 1-20 esp if scholarships offered</p>

<p>I think canada has strong science/non liberal art majors, but like economics, finance. US is a lot better</p>
<p>It all depends on your major and what you gonna do after graduation.If you plan to live in the USA it would be better to study in the usa if you plan to live in canada a canadian university is perfect.In my case i gave up U of Toronto mainly because they don't have my major and i prefer living in the USA plus i visited U of toronto and didn't like, it too big ,i felt just like a number .</p>
<p>hey im an american who has thought a lot about comming up to Canada for University for a couple of reasons. one of the most important is cost-- even as an international student id pay a LOT less than id pay as a domestic student in the US (assuming i dont get MASSIVE amounts of scholarships here)... i think that while some canadian universities may not have the name recignition of HYP anyone who matters will be aware of the many great canadian universities
if you really have your heart set on comming to the US dont forget to look into the LACs. I honestly believe you can get a equal/better education at the top LACs as opposed to the ivies.</p>

<p>Btw I want to study biochemistry. I know people say different university are good for different majors, but does it really make that much difference at undergraduate level?</p>
<p>For biochem, my friends told me that only JHU, DUKE and maybeee Uchicago are better than UofT.
Dartmouth and Brown are more artsy type of school, however they will offer you a terrific educational experience</p>
<p>as theatreworm mentioned, the top LACs certainly offer quality education even the big ivies can not hope to rival. </p>
<p>Williams, Middlebury, Bowdoin, and Davidson are all outstanding places to spend your undergrad years. They provide close-knitted school communities plus MUCH more accessible and responsible profs who solely devote their time to undergraduate teaching. If you are really thinking ahead, it may be a big advantage to spend your undergrad years at a LAC and receive quality education and preparation for a BRAND NAME ivy graduate school. Now that's the ideal long term strategy</p>

First of all, does getting a bachelor degree in US as opposed to Canada have any advantage in getting into US medical school? Secondly, if I don't go to American med school, does not having a canadian undergrad degree hurt my chances of getting into Canadian med school?</p>
<p>I don't think having a Bachelor's degree from an American school will help or hinder your chances of getting into a Canadian medical school. You should still retain your residency status which will help in admissions (at least in Alberta and BC, you're still considered a resident of that province if you studied high school there) The only thing I've heard is to not expect a degree from Harvard to hold more weight than a degree from say UBC, if say the Harvard person has a lower GPA</p>
