Canadians!

If you're a Canadian applying for RD acceptance to an American university, or already got accepted ED, please post :)

Canadaeh: Applying to Cornell (Top Choice), JHU, Columbia, and UMich

Transfering(in march that is) to Dartmouth from University of Toronto
fingers crossed!

Deferred from Harvard EA. :)

But in all likelyhood, you will be able to find me in Montreal next year. My top two choices are McGill and UBC.

cowgirl, sorry to hear you got deffered. Do u think u have idea why? Did you do ED?

What do you think your chances are of getting in from "deffered?"

When did you take your SATs? In grade 11?

Thanks, I'm too noob.

I applied EA (I don't think harvard has ED).

Reasons I might have been deferred:
*being an international - they want to get a look at the canadian applicant pool
*my school - we send 1-2 people to Harvard each year. I already know of two other people (at least) who applied EA - one is a legacy and the other is ranked pretty high nationally in chem and math - and both got deferred as well. Also, about 5 people are applying RD. I'm pretty sure Harvard wants to check on the other applicants so they can have their pick of us... haha.
*SAT score - 2100, which by CC standards, is practically nothing :P My SAT II's are still good though... 750 Biology E, 800 Math 2, and 770 French with listening

I'd say my chances at getting in are decent. Say they accept two people from my school... well last year I got my school's award for "Most Outstanding Grade 11 Student" and the science/math girl who got deferred got "Top Academic". That has got to be worth something for us.

I took my SAT1 in October and my SAT2's in November. I only took each test once. I didn't want to waste any more Saturdays of my life than I had to after I took the first one. It was the essay that killed me... it was painful because they spend about an hour explaining how to fill in all the bubbles. So after I had woken up early just to listen to that and was completely brain dead - I have 25 minutes to write something coherent? Yeahh right! Normally I'm a good writer but the week before was pretty killer... IB history practice papers, chem labs, and the like. But if you are serious about going to the US (unlike Montreal loving me!!), then I would suggest you write the SATs as a junior, and then again as a senior if you need to to improve your score.

:) Good luck with this whole process.

your an awesome wild cow girl!

I think HARVARD deserves you for RD.

So maybe I should just do RD...

But thanks for all of your well said advices.

I KNOW you will be successful - ANYWHERE you go.

I wish churchill gave academic awards, or actually awards of ANY kind to grade 11's.

Aloha, and yours truly!

Aloha to you too... how is that physics studying going IVYPoison? I mean, since I'm on CC I must be getting my world lit paper done lol.

Ecsteveo32... aww thanks! My cowgirl-inspired username actually came right after I spent the weekend at a camp reunion... doing some horseback riding of course, like any wild cowgirl in their right mind should be! :D Good luck, and have an awesome year!

newby, tell me what happens if you do get to transger to darthmouth!
i'm thinking of doing a university to university transfer (york to american uni) as well and it'd be interesting to know how the process would work.

Hey, is anybody from British Columbia or Vancouver here?

I'm suffering from PAA right now. Post-Application-Anxiety. 3 months is A LOT of waiting. Anyway, funny to think that although we're totaly done our apps, the adcoms are only beginning their evaluations. Sigh.

btw guys, when did you guys do your SAT IIs? After you learned the grade 11 stuff or did you study the Grade 12 subjects at your spare time?
I have no clue how to do my Subjects when I haven't learned them this grade 11 year? Help.

Bliss... good luck.

Thanks stevo.

Anyway. I'll give you a clue of what I did with my SAT IIs. The II exams I took were: Math IIC, Bio and Chem.

I studied AP Bio & AP Chemistry in my junior year. I took my Chem II and Math IIC last November. For the Math IIC (which is the preferred exam, if you're going into the top-tier schools), you need to pretty much self-study the entire grade 12 curriculum ahead of time. For Chem II, I dont even think grade 12 Chem is good enough. IF you choose not to take chem AP, at least get a good SAT II study guide; sparksnotes.com also has great information about the subject exams.

Yeah SAT IIs are a bit weird because the curriculums don't match up.

Just take subjects you are good at and have some grade 12 experience in if possible. I finished IB Math Methods (French) and IB Biology SL in junior year, and the respective SAT subject tests went relatively well (math 2 and bio e). I also took French with Listening because I've been in immersion since kindergarden.

If you won't have any grade 12 courses done, definetly buy a study guide. Most are good, except I wouldn't suggest using Kaplan for the Math Subject tests... I've found quite a few errors in that book! Their biology review book is good, but I got fed up with studying for that test because so much of the IB stuff didn't cover the SAT stuff. Who honestly cares what the digestive system of a grasshopper looks like?!

i think cowgirlatheart is great too, but keep in mind, there are many great canadian students, take phenoixchancellor on cc for example, he is also an awesome dude, EA harvard too, as far as i am concerned, you people are great, and deserve a great place, and you'll probably end up at somewhere very good!

So true. Canadians rock.

Hehe, Cambridge's got no AP or IB schools. Am I screwed?

i took the two satii's first in grade 11 unprepared,

650 math iic, chem 720

spent august and september this year to learn everything for mathiic, chem, physics

took the test in october, by then school started reviewing some stuff
math iic 800, chem 780, physics 750. another student who self studied and took it on the same date got 800 math , 790 physics

the secret is to read ahead of your grade, i knew two friends who did that last year in grade 11, they scored 800, 800, 780 and 800, 780, 800, in the order described above

once you finish grade 11 math, you're only missing logs (in general, as long as you know how to use your calculator, you should be fine) solve for the answer, and check by plugging back the answer into the question to see if it holds true

say they give you e^x = 3.5
if you haven't learnt how to do this yet, just plug in the answers they give you into the calculator, until it works

chem - once you finish grade 12 chem, you can definately do this
physics - same as above

Sounds good.

I will probably take the safe route by not attempting EA.

I will take the SAT IIs once in November and then once in January -if it's possible?

I will finish grade 11 Chem and Phys. Buy Barrons and Kaplan. Study them in summer. Review in fall. Be ready.

Thanks for advice.

Accepted EA at UChicago, ED at Penn...going to Penn. Go Quakers!

Did you try other schools?

I was ready to send in apps for RD to Stanford, P'ton, NYU-Stern, Columbia, Dartmouth, Northwestern, Amherst, Williams and Swarthmore. I withdrew the Berkeley app that I filed December 1.
