I just found out today that I received a 3 on the AP Spanish Language exam. (Though I got an A in the class...)

I kind of predicted this and to be honest, I'm happy with my score. However, should I cancel/not send a 3 on AP Spanish to colleges? The rest of my AP scores are 5s and one 4.

I plan on applying to Ivy Leagues.

Thanks in advance!

Are you non-native? If so, that’s a great score and its not bad even if you are native. It’ll get you credit, I think.

No, I’m not native.

I doubt that it will get you credit. If you’re applying to Ivies, they’d likely only take 4s and 5s. The schools that I applied to don’t even take foreign language AP’s for credit. They just give you a placement exam if you want to continue the class in college. I’m going to be a freshman in college next year, a non-native speaker, and I got a 3 with a B in the class. The most prestigious college I was accepted at was Boston College and I was a waitlist at Notre Dame. Not quite Ivy status, but I did quite alright getting into good colleges with the 3. As I understand it, colleges don’t seriously look at AP scores so much as their respective grades in the class. AP scores are essentially just for credit if applicable. Don’t worry. Send it in. It’s a good score.

Okay, I will. Thank you both so much!!!

If anyone else has any differing opinions, please do let me know!

Hi MountainToSeize, since you’re not a native speaker, colleges won’t see a 3 as a bad thing. Granted, if you are applying to Ivies they would like to see 4s and 5s, but a 3 on an AP test on a language you didn’t grow up speaking is still impressive (it’s still considered a passing grade!).
Toast8152 is right. If I were you I’d send it in with all your other scores––good luck!

Thank you, CertainAbsurdity!

I dont believe you can cancel a score once it is released but you can pay extra to withold it when you send a report to college.

Nah. Pretty much for every reason everyone has already stated. You are not a native speaker and thus, a 3 on AP Spanish is pretty impressive.

Me too. I did almost as well as some native speakers (4s) and outscored others (some I think got 2s) so it’s not what I wanted, but I will take it.

Why cancel or withhold it? At some schools, a 3 in a foreign language AP may satisfy a foreign language requirement.

^ that’s true but I was, at first, a bit worried about admin believing there is grade inflation since I got an A-/A both semesters but only a 3 on the exam. I think I will send in the score and hope that the admin can see that I got the A simply by trying very hard in the class.
