What is the appropriate way to cancel remaining auditions? Would an e-mail suffice or should we send snail mail (or call)? My d has decided on her EA school and we don't want to tie up audition spaces for others.

Thanks!

Last year when my D was accepted to Michigan, which was her hands down first choice, she still had two auditions remaining, PSU and BOCO. She was clear that cancelling them was the right thing to do so I called the admissions and theater offices of both schools. I found their responses quite telling. The woman at PSU was so nice - she congratulated us and was most grateful that we were thoughtful enough to let them know our plans. I thanked them for all the courtesies they had shown us on a previous visit and in their correspondence and phone conversations. They were always helpful. The person on the phone at BOCO was curt to the point of rudeness and that was the end of that. I also wrote follow-up notes.

I really think that the best way to make sure the schools have the most time to reschedule the slot your child is cancelling is to call the appropriate offices(s) directly as soon as you know your plans and then follow up in writing so they have something to put in your child's file as a way of closing it.

Care to share the thought process that your D underwent in deciding to cancel all remaining auditions? Were there quite a few left? I seem to remember she had several this fall, or am I mixing her up with others? It's hard to keep everyone straight? I agree that OCU is a fine program...my daughter is THRILLED to have the early MT acceptance too. I'm sure your daughter will be very happy at OCU.....who knows, our daughters could be classmates next year!

Yes, my d had 3 auditions this fall and had scheduled 2 more for the spring semester. She did the first 3 EA, but because many of the schools are such a great distance away from us, she planned auditions sight unseen. After visiting the schools and learning more about the programs, she decided that OCU was a good fit for her. Some factors in her decision are: She was looking for a balanced program but one with a very strong voice component as she has had years of classical voice and piano so the BM degree is better for her than the BFA. Early on, she was undecided as to whether she wanted a conservatory education (and remaining auditions are conservatory programs), but she decided after visiting several schools that she would like to have the liberal arts aspect of her education as well. Another huge factor in her decision was the way she was treated by everyone at OCU. Since August when she first requested info, everyone at the college has gone out of their way to be helpful and welcoming to her. Also, the strength of the program was very evident when we saw their opera production of Hansel and Gretel...always see a productionwherever you go audition, if you can. Finally, there is a large scholarship that will be hard to beat and that was hard to pass up. I would have gladly taken her to her remaining auditions, the cost notwithstanding, but she decided that OCU was a great place for her to study, and given the odds of acceptance to any one program, let alone several, she was glad to say she was finished with auditions.

Thanks to everyone who has given advice concerning canceling remaining auditions. We will do that today as I would certainly hate to keep anyone from having the opportunity to audition.
