canceling dorm contract for spring semester and living in co-ops

im thinking about canceling my dorm contract for foothill (if possible) and just living in a co-op because it's cheaper.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Any advice on co-ops/apartments in berkeley?

thanks

I canceled my contract also for a spring semester, I moved to a studio apartment. It isn’t a big deal; their are so many people on the waiting list that it isn’t a problem finding someone to fill your “void”. I think you lose a $300 deposit though, if I remember correctly.

Hey hey, I’m seriously considering doing the same thing for next semester (I’m in Stern). You should consider going on the co-op system’s official tours this weekend or their dinners next week. (I’m guessing this is why you’re posting now?) I looked at a lot of co-op photos and none of them look cleaner than an avg. dorm, but if there’s any sort of community, I think I’m moving.

^ actually i didn’t know anything about that haha.

do you have any info on it?

I just read this:

http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/policies/Appeal%20Instructions.pdf

and it said that I cannot cancel my contract under the idea that I want to live in a coop.

What gives?

Hmmm…where did you find that? Elsewhere on the housing site, it says people who want to move into the Greek system have to get a replacement…obviously doesn’t exclude them. Did they change the policy? I wanna get out of this hall…

The tour schedule (acc. to a guy at the co-op office):
Sat - Northside tours at 11am, meet at the co-op office (2424 Ridge Rd)
Sun - Southside tours at 2pm, meet at the I-House

And then every night the next week, two or so houses will be holding dinners around 6-6:30pm. I have the schedule, which I can type up, or you can call the office to confirm.

I found it here:

[Living at Cal - Res Hall Policies](http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/reshall_policies.html)

, first link from the top.

I agree though, elsewhere on the site it says it’s fine and gives options for greek, alternate housing etc…

@birdhouse: are those times for this saturday?

co-op?

can anyone explain what these are? i found a wiki article, but i’m not 100% sure it’s the same thing.

it’s this right? [University Students’ Cooperative Association - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Berkeley Student Cooperative - Wikipedia)

That is strange…the second link makes cancelling so easy. Both forms updated this year…huh, I think I’ll call them tomorrow and ask if we have to have to get an appeal. Can anyone from last yr tell us if this process is different now?

Yep, those are this weekend, 24-25.

@ fiesta – yeah that looks right…I didn’t even think of checking them out on wiki. You can look at the site (BSC.coop?) and talk to their tablers on sproul.

@fiesta: Co ops at Berkeley are group living situations where the occupants of the house also run the house, clean the house, cook the meals, do the gardening, etc. They are typically cheaper than other housing: meals are included and each member of the house has to contribute a certain number of service hours each week/month. There is a bidding system for different types of jobs, different types of rooms, etc. Most jobs and room assignments are made based on a point system. Points are generally earned via seniority in the Co op.

Okay, I finally called today and this is what they told me:

The first form’s for canceling the whole contract (+fall). Think it’s for if you need to move out THIS semester?
And second’s for the spring portion. So you don’t have to go through an appeal.

Is that right?

bump…anyone?

hey I am also thinking to move out of my unit 2 and live in an apartment with my friend from my high school…

How is the cancellation process?

do i just go sign the form and wait for the answer?

how is the rate of cancelling the contract for res hall

for a transfer student

Later in the semester, you will receive an e-mail about canceling the contract.

is anyone thinking of canceling their contract in Unit 1?

i want to cancel for unit 3. what are the chances? i think theyre high cause unit 3 is popular

Question: If you cancel your spring contract, what happens to your meal plan for spring? From what I understand, it’s included in your monthly room and board fees so it’s simply cancelled, right? No hassle of refunds or whatnot.
