canceling housing contract - how hard is it?

this question is for a friend of mine
basically spring housing has been sent out. so the housing dep told my friend its too late to cancel the contract for spring and what not. my friend is in financial trouble and if he can't pay for it. won't he get suspended from school and ultimately withdraw? can the university really "force" someone to stick with the contract like that?

Your friend can find someone to take over the remainder of the contract. (ppl do it on this forum plenty of times http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/603231-want-dorm-spring-09-i-have-one-you.html) It shouldn't be too hard to find a willing person given this year's housing shortage and # of FPF/spring admit students.

Not sure if the univ. can 'force' ppl to stick to their housing contracts. But for Berkeley landlord-tenant laws, if a tenant signs a 1 yr lease they have to stick with it for one year. They can only leave the contract if the lease is transferred to another person with the landlord's approval.

hmm? how did u know there is a shortage? O.O

A good chunk of CKC was closed down.

oh thats true >_> completely 4got about that

I spoke to housing today and they said they don't know anything about a Cal housing shortage. It doesn't make sense to me, but that's what they said. Persistence!

does talking to someone higher up work? is there any way to contact the people who actually DECIDE if u get to cancel ur contract or not? the receptionists and w/e just make everyone go thru the same process =/
