There are two questions to ask that define the college admissions process. “Why not?” followed by “Why?” and yes the order generally matters.

The “why not” factors are the ones that keep you out of a particular school, low grades, low scores, took only the easiest classes available, etc. Unless you’ve got an ace up your sleeve, you have to clear these hurdles to get in, and at some of the large state schools, clearing the “why not” is enough. From the look of it, you’ve cleared the basic barriers; your scores and grades are in a range that gives you a shot.

At Georgetown and other top schools, though, a lot of kids clear the “why not” so it comes time for the second set of factors, the “why?”. So ask yourself this, “Why would Georgetown let me in?” The answer can sometimes be purely academic, but your GPA and scores don’t say to me “Holy cow, this kid is the next Stephen Hawking”). So, you need something that looks compelling to the committee. Ask yourself, do I have that something? If you do, you’re in. If you can’t think of a “why” that doesn’t mean you won’t get in: Maybe the committee will see a “why” that you don’t. Maybe your teacher recs will pull out all the superlatives and make it happen for you. Maybe you’ll just have the right mix of extracurriculars, grades, etc. and they’ll decided to bring you in. I don’t know what the answer is and, frankly, no one does.

well said potatoes. essentially, to summarize, you need grades + A NICE HOOK.
