Hi Steve! My son will be there...he's planning on the good jeans-the ones without the holes! Also, the patriot league championships are being held at USNA Thurs. thru Sat., so if anyone is a swim/dive fan, get your plebe to point you in the right direction of the aquatic center. My son is going early/staying late to see some events.

Hey Steve, when I went in November my mid suggested I don't wear jeans, so I just wore slacks instead. I didn't see many drags with jeans. As far as shirts go I wore a collared polo shirt and a button down long sleeve, its really not a big deal, just dont look like a slob :)

would not recommend jeans- good, bad or otherwise.

Dockers, kaki's... ok. Belt. no sneakers. No tee shirts. Collared shirts (knits ok, or the regular button down type).

At various times the Mids will be in uniform. Jeans will stick out like a sore thumb. Please keep in mind that unless you have an appointment in hand, you are still a "Candidate in search of." Make a good impression- at every opportunity. You never know who you will meet while on the yard, but one thing is for certain- you get one chance to make a first impression, so make it a good one.

Thank you for the advice...was trying to avoid having to buy any more clothes, since after June he's not wearing any of this stuff...but I guess we're off to the mall to find suitable khakis! They'll sit in the closet with the new suit he had to have to interview w/ the MOC's! haha...oh well!

When I went in October, I only brought khakis and corduroy pants because my mom said it would look bad to wear jeans. My mid said it would have been fine to bring jeans.

I don't see a problem with jeans and sneakers. It's pretty chilly here, though. Don't worry about being formally dressed, we don't care and I doubt you'll meet anyone of importance on the Yard. It's not like they walk around amidst us. So be comfortable and don't buy anything new.

Okay, I went to the January CVW. Jeans are fine, you are not going to be denied because you wore jeans to CVW. Most plebes were like why is that kid dressed like that? when they saw a kid with a tucked in shirt looking all uptight. You are there to get a look at the academy not show admissions how nice you can dress, because they could really care less.

Well, honestly, son will wear the suggested khakis out of respect for the academy. He already has the appointment and I doubt they would pull it if he showed up in jeans. It will be good to have a pair of khakis in the closet when he comes home to visit... =)

I went to the October CVW. Most of the Mids that I met didn't care whether I was wearing jeans or slacks. I wore black slacks and a collared shirt for the classes, and I would wear the same things if I was going to another CVW. More importantly than what you wear for classes is to make sure you bring swimming stuff and other workout clothes. I participated in the Saturday morning swim PT with the plebes.

I would bet no one will be getting in the pool during this CVW; Patriot League championships for swim/dive will monopolize the pool the entire weekend....unless it's in the very wee hours--no events scheduled then, but practices probably will be.

Thanks for all the perspectives guys. I've always believed it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, so I've decided to pack both slacks and jeans.

I would bring a swim suit. We have 3 pools to choose from, so swim PT always goes on. People in khakis and tucked in shirts do look really uptight and people usually think, oh they're one of those....

So what do you suggest they wear? They're going to stand out regardless...khakis and their high school letter jackets don't exactly look like what the rest of you are wearing. =)

I've been following this discussion with some interest. Son is doing his visit in April. His normal school wear is khakis or dress pants, dress shirt and tie, and sport coat (dress code for him).

I'm getting a bit amused that for his first SA visit, he'll be dressing more casual than what he is used to!

(He's got an appt to USMA but is waiting and hoping for USNA)

That wasn't a "this is what my kid will wear" but more of a general comment on the jacket of choice for most high school athletes. It is going to be cold in Annapolis this weekend...for those who haven't checked the weather yet. There is a chance of snow, too. Brrrrrrr.
