Candidate Visitation Weekend

I got a letter in the mail today about being invited to Candidate Visitation Weekend. Did anyone else get this letter? Has anyone gone in the past and willing to share their experience? Is it similar to NASS?

Does anyone know who gets invited to a candidate visitation weekend? What qualifies you for an invite?

My son got the letter today, inviting him on 25 October or 15 November.

He hasn't completed very much of the USNA application at all (one teacher recommendation, SAT scores, and HS transcripts have been sent), nor did he attend NASS.

USNA pretty much limits CVW to those who they know are going to be scholastically qualified. It is nothing like NASS. NASS is summer camp. This is the real deal. You will "tail" a plebe for two days, doing everything that he does, learning and hearing what it is like to be a real plebe. Don't turn it down.

My daughter received an Invitation in today's mail to the 15-17 November 2007 CVW. There is also an CVW the weekend of 25-27 October 2007 for those who can't make the November event.

I would strongly encourage anyone contemplating attending USNA next year to spend a weekend with a Plebe. It will give them a better perspective of the life of a plebe and midshipman. Might make the difference between going and going elsewhere!

What percentage of the invites did they send out today? I believe I'm scholastically qualified (750 SAT Math, 34 ACT Eng) and I attended NASS. I received nothing in the mail today (I realized it's a bit early to be worrying but I am anyways lol).

Thanks

I don't know percentages but I do know that they send out CVW invites to those that may not have attended NASS. I know people that got invites to CVW that didn't go to NASS and those that went to NASS didn't get invites to CVW until much later in the academic year.

Do not fret if you did not get an invite this week! If you have the credentials to get in, you will eventually get an invite!

Don't worry about it too much. If you don't get a letter in this round, there will more than likely be several other weekends in the January to March timeframe. That's the way it's been for at least the past couple of years.

Ok thanks... you guys always make me feel all better :) lol

Ditto to much of what's been said. Last year there were 6 weekends running through March or April. Some got invited to 1 or 2, others any of the 6. Not sure what the rhyme or reason may be, but suspicious that it's a combination of being scholastically qualified (or seemingly will be) and/or how much of one's app is completed. The read might be something like "we think you might be an appointable candidate and recognizing you're serious about this and anticipating that you may also receive a nomination we want you to have the chance to look at USNA from a 'real' perspective (or at least more real than one might receive at NASS) that you might assess if this is 'really' a good choice for you and so we're inviting you to come on down and be a 'drag' for a plebe for a few days."

Invitations were sent out throughout the year so don't fret if you've not yet received one. I'm doubtful this has anything at all to do with one's NASS attendance, or otherwise. When you do receive one, go if you're able. And if you're not, don't sweat that either. This is not part of any candidate's degree-of-commitment score. That said, the plebes were asked to submit an observational report on their drag.

For mine, he loved seeing it up close. He said it was the best sleep-over ever, and that weekend was the confirming, final "I'm goin if they'll take me." They did and he did. Happy as a clam despite often being treated like one. He's even gained weight. Go figure.

Attending a CVW in February is what helped me decide to attend USNA. The Fall ones are rarely full but demand goes up in the Spring and there usually aren't enough spots for everyone that wants to go. If you received an invite for a fall CVW and want to see USNA during the Ac year, you should come!

Mine never was asked for the two drags he had last year.

Not sure how much they will get to experience this year with mando study time on Friday night. That was the night that mine, when he dragged, had so much fun. Also presented the impression that the place was a Military setting with a somewhat a college type experience. Plus the food was actually really good that Friday. LOL now!

i recieved a cvw letter today and am planning on going to november...does anyone have advice on what to bring, wear, etc??

^^^^^
You will receive a confirmation letter from the Admission Office instructing you on what to bring.

During the November CVW there will be a banquet that requires informal attire. For men that means Business Suits (i.e., coat and tie) and for women that means a cocktail dress/appropriate attire.

For attending classes, you should wear decent casual attire. That means no t-shirts, shorts, flip flops, pajamas, sweats, etc. Leave your letter jackets at home.

For athletic activities, you should bring a swimming suit, workout gear, and running shoes.

Last year, my son brought a sleeping bag that worked great with the cot that was provided by USNA. You may also want to bring a pillow.

Candidates should also bring some money to purchase souvenirs, snacks, and sundries. If USNA looks like a go, candidates may want to consider purchasing a copy of Reef Points from the Mid Store while at the academy.

My son is planning to attend the CVW beginning October 25th. He is planning to fly up to BWI and take a shuttle over the the yard. However, he is interested in attending (at least the first half) of the game on Saturday, and catching the shuttle in time to make his flight later that evening. Does anyone have any suggestions on how he might get to and from the stadium, and/or where he might stash his stuff while attending the game?

It's not a long walk in nice weather - about a mile from USNA, give or take. I am there for evey football game and would be happy to hold his stuff in my car until he decides to leave for BWI. If you want to take me up on the offer, send me a PM.

I just got mine today! I'm going to go in November- so there's a formal? I also read that there is a football game and the masqueraders are performing! Oh and I think it said its Community Selection Night that Thursday! Is there anyway we could watch that?

I just got the invite today. I don't know if I'm going though... really bad weekends. October - my football team will have the first round of the playoffs, november is opening weekend of deer season (opens on the 15th). Is there any way I could get into another CVW since... its really bad timing?

We're trying to figure out how to work out CVW, too. We hadn't expected to hear anything so soon, and the November date is the same weekend as our Congressman's interview day, so that's absolutely out. The October weekend is also bad, but possibly workable.

Does anyone know what time things begin on Thursday, and when they end on Saturday?
