Candidate's Choice Application

Hi,
I know this has been discussed before, but I just wanted to make sure things are the same for this year's RPI Candidate's Choice Application. I am a medalist, so I've started filling it out and noticed that there is nowhere to include an essay. Would it help to wait and submit the common app with an essay? And is it still true that Candidate's Choice applicants will receive notification within 28 days?
Any information would be appreciated!

Hi, I was wondering the same thing! I’m a little confused though that I received the Candidate’s Choice Application since I’m not a spectacular, over-the-top student so I know NOTHING about it.

My son just received this an email for this application too. We’d never heard of this. Is there any benefits to submitting this one, or is it just for the school to receive additional applications.

I believe the only difference is your application fee is waived. (If you are a medalist, not sure for others.) Everything else is the same, your application will not be processed any differently or any faster. Be aware that the website states that if you are using naviance to send any credentials, you must have submitted the common app or RPI will not receive them.

Okay I feel like it’s still kind of unclear to everyone so I’m going to try to contact someone at the admissions office & I’ll post their reply here.

On a different note-
This is probably mostly opinion, but even though subject tests aren’t required, would it be helpful to send one or more of a 700 Math I, 680 US History, and 670 Chemistry?

Hope this helps everyone:
"Thank you for your email and your interest in Rensselaer. The Candidate’s Choice Application is our own application (Rensselaer-specific). We do not prefer any one application over another- we also accept the Common Application and the Universal College Application. Which application you use is completely up to you, so you may use whichever one is most convenient for you. The Candidate’s Choice application is a little shorter, and some of the information is pre-populated. We are looking for the same thing whether you complete the personal statement on the Candidate’s Choice Application or the essay on the Common Application.

You may use any application to apply under any of our application options (Early Decision or Regular Decision). Our application deadlines are below- and all of the deadlines and notification dates are the same no matter which application you use to apply. When you are notified of your decision depends on how you apply, no matter when you actually submit your application (i.e., you may submit an application in August under Regular Decision, and you still wouldn’t receive a decision until March 8th). Also, no matter which application you choose to use, your application fee is waived as a Rensselaer Medalist.

Early Decision I (binding): November 1 (notification on December 14th)
Accelerated Law/Medical: November 1 (please note students applying for these programs may NOT use the Candidate’s Choice Application)
Early decision II (binding): December 15 (notification on January 18th)
Regular Decision (non-binding): January 15 (notification on March 8th)"

Glad you got a response so quickly. My son who will be attending in the fall chose to submit the common app as he had to do it anyway for the other schools he applied to. I’m pretty sure they ask on the supplement whether you are a medalist. He was not.
