I am currently torn in many directions in trying to choose a school to attend this upcoming fall. I intend to study Aerospace or Mechanical engineering based on which school I attend. I have gotten into the following schools:

University of Pittsburgh (Mechanical Engineering, full tuition scholarship, Honors College)

University of Notre Dame (Aerospace Engineering, still waiting on aid)

Purdue University (Aerospace Engineering, $10,000 a year scholarship)

University of Michigan (Aerospace Engineering, $10,000 a year scholarship)

University of Illinois (Aerospace Engineering, still waiting on aid)

Case Western Reserve (Aerospace Engineering, $25k scholarship)

Virginia Tech (Aerospace Engineering, interviewing for scholarship next weekend)

My EFC is around $30k so I am wondering which of these schools would be best! I really loved Notre Dame, but I realize that it is extremely expensive and gives little aid. Any advice you guys have would be greatly appreciated!

Hands down UMich wins here but with a EFC of 30k it is not possible to attend it. Any of them in-state ? That college will get the slight edge.

Second on my list would be Purdue because aerospace is one of the strongest major there. Third University of Illinois, a top engineering school. Fourth University of Notre Dame but you cannot afford it so lets wipe it off. Virginia Tech and Case Western are also good college for aerospace. SO, new list ranked
- UMich
- Purdue
- Illinois
- Virginia Tech, Case Western, Notre Dame

I have also been accepted at U of Cincinatti’s Aerospace Program and Ohio State’s Aerospace Program

I live in Ohio

Ohio State is also a good college for engineering…SO, to narrow down your list :
Answer these questions:
- Where do you want to work after graduation ? (most important)
- Do you like urban or rural ? (important)
- How much can your family pay ?(need a number) Are you okay with taking out loans ? (too much debt can ruin your life)
- What is your intended major ? (You need to choose 1 not two.)

Just asking: Why isn’t Penn State on that list ?

If you have no preference all all for anything, then I would say Purdue because it is affordable for you and has an excellent reputation for Aerospace Engineering. Then second will be Ohio State, most inexpensive and in-state also good college for engineering but has very high student population.

I want to work either in a research facility or for an aerospace company such as Boeing.

I learn more towards urban, but I have no problems with rural.

My family can pay $30k a year. Seeing as engineering salaries are up, I think that I would be okay with taking on a significant amount of debt.

At every school that has Aerospace engineering, I will be in that major. However at Pittsburgh, they do not have Aerospace engineering, so I would do Mechanical there.

I was told that Pittsburgh gave out better scholarships, and by the time I looked at Penn State, I had already applied at many similar places.

I don’t know why you would select any other school on your list besides Pitt. It’s a great university. Save your family the money to spend on graduate school, a house down payment or your parents’ retirement.

The problem with Pitt is that its more known for its sciences like pre-med and stuff rather than engineering. (Not saying their engineering program is bad…)

I realize that! The only reason Pitt is on my list was because I was a good candidate for a full-ride, which unfortunately I did not receive.

if you live in Ohio then go for Case Western reserve ,their Aerospace,Mechanical programs are great.
and the school it self is awesome ,god d**n how lucky you are, wish I were you Bro :)

and purdue is great choice.
